I recently bought a 1206 with a pile of hours on it. It needs either to start it even when its 60 deg. It run fine (or ran fine until I blew the motor - that's another story) and had real good power. I noticed It has a Stanadyne fuel pump on it. Isn't it supposed to have a Roosamaster?? I know of plenty of 30 series Deeres with Stanadynes that are cold blooded also. Is this a better system than the roosamaster or is it the only thing available as a replacement nowadays. I suppose a engine rebuild will help it start better but I suppose it needs injectors fuel pump work also. Any opinions???

o6er: If you are serious about that tractor and want it done right. It would need the update done on it. Their is a service bulletin for the rebore for .10 oversize sleeve to bring it back to standard and compensate for a stretching in the upper part of the combustion chamber that has occurred over time. If it is not done, the upper part of the sleeve will inevitably crack at the edge of block at the top of the bore. Very common with the 361 and 407 cubic engines, with many hours. That plus shimming the injectors and getting the breaking pressure and valve recession in order and please do check the timing gears in that particular engine as they do require looking at, they are noted for wear. This has a notable effect on the timing of that engine. Please let me know how it turns out. Good Luck Old Dutch

The DT361 is not and engine for a novice to rebuild as it has some quarks and after rebuild if not done correctly will come unguled fast. When they are correct in every way they will start with out either sometimes down to 0 . Propper valve placement in the head as far a s valve resession or protrusion is one of the factors as to how well they will start and how well the rings seat in , then comes the pump and injectors if the cranling pressure on the pump is low and the cracking or breaking pressure of the injector is down then the spray pattern will be off and this will lead to a hard start along with the timming of injection. To do a super job on rebuild one MUST have the block done from top to bottom and if it has not had the bore redone and the oversized sleeves installed to correct the core shift that does happen in the 361-407 and the sleeve checked from top to bottom for any wrinkening and trued up it will seeze up fast and send a rod out the side of the block . So a line bore , decking of the block correcting the center line of the bore total rebuild of the head and getting the valve heads set to correct hight fitting each piston to the bore that it is going to be installed in and even a balance job is in order then ya got a engine that will give you years of service . And don"t be cheep on it use only quality parts and service .

Any 361 or 407 that needs ether is getting tired. Give it a full overhaul and have the pump and injectors rebuilt, all you should need then is a couple hours with the tank heater plugged in when it gets down around freezing. Stanadyne is the company that builds Roosa-Master pumps these days, same thing. 30 series Deeres start hard for other reasons, mainly because some of the engines weren"t built to exact torerances. The head gasket kits from Deere include a thinner head gasket to help get the compression up.

Sounds like your engine was just getting tired. A complete overhaul and a pump and injector rebuild should make it start like it should again. Do your engine a favor and DO NOT use either if at a possable. Either is the fastest way there is to destroy a 361/407 engine! Install a good block heater and use it!

i don't know who told you that, but they lied.
i will say if you need ether don't get the cheap stuff, use JD or CASE/IH.
use to pull a 407,used a can of ether everytime it started.

Well I've had a few apart with peices of sleeves missing, broken rings, blowen head gaskets and other piston damage from either overuse. If your tractor has a hydraulic TA like all tractors that have a 361 or 407, there is no way you can pull start it.

roosamaster & stanadyne are the same company. i own a 1206 myself, welcome to the club...buy a case of starting fluid...lol they all seem to be cold bloody as hell...if you have to rebuild the motor, since ya said it blow up, look into the 407 conversion kits the pullers are useing..its the same block and give ya some more cubes, if ya pull it...

I would send the injector pump for a rebuild and have the injectors checked out too. I would check around for cost too. It should start better with a rebuild. Hal
