I had a similar problem once on my cub, it turned out my intake manifold had a crack in it and was letting in air, the crack was small and could not be seen, I found it buy starting the tractor and squirting a little carb and choke cleanier on it, when I did the motor ran like it should have. just be cafeful remember you are using a flamable substance on a very hot part of the tractor. well I changed the manifold and that took care of the problem. thats my two cents, I am sure there is a safer way to check the manifold I am just not smart enough to know what they are. have a happy new year

Might well be a fuel supply problem. I have had simlar gremlins. Sounds like you have checked out the spark. Clogged fuel line may be causing starvation at higher throttle. Alternately, the air fuel mix at the carb could be too lean.

3 things you need to start fuel, spark, compression.

Just a thought!

Find out which cyl is not firing (pull plug wires with an insulated pliers one at a time)
then switch plugs from that one cyl to the next. see if it still misses on the same one.

If it does, then check the intake manifold as described above (I use a propane torch with the nozzle removed set just open as though I was using it, not wide open---I also do not invert the tank) Propane has far fewer terrible toxic material in it than carb cleaner. The toluene Xylene, and clorinated solvents can produce a form of nerve gas when burned or heated, (that is why I don't use them).

A wiped cam lobe will act like that as well.

Pull the valve cover and check the amount of travel on the valves on that cyl compared to the others.

Good luck, JimN
