Hi , Since I didn't open the gearcase in the mist today I wanted to do something so I started on the light's . I got em off with an electric impact . I took them apart so now I have a few question's about how to return them to good usable condition .

1 ) Is there someone or somewhere that can re-tin the reflector ? In order to get the black dullness out of them I polished them with fine white polishing compound and my finger and some " outor " ( That's how it's spelled - it's pronounced " water " ) . I have a nice shiny brass reflector now in one of the lights . The other one polished out OK .

2 ) How many different styles of light were put on the M . Both of mine are teardrop and are made by Guide but the bucket's are slightly different at the mounting stud and one was painted black inside and the other one was IH red inside . Also , the one that was black inside had a wire to ground the socket to the bucket and the red one had a perforated copper strap that pinched between the reflector and bucket .

3 ) On the black interior one there was some of the original ( I think ) gasket left and it looked like packing gland material - sort of . Or maybe a black plumber's putty . But it wasn't a formed rubber gasket I'm sure of that . So , The question is - Can these gasket's be gotten at the dealer ( IHC ) or anyplace else ? Thanks ! ...Randy

The black lights are the oldest but came from IH. Guide painted allof their lights black at first and later painted them to match the make of tractor they made them for. WE had a 40 M with lights painted black. The 39 lights on H and M had a small screw that that screwed from the light body to the reflector under the rim and a square connector on the back instead of the round one. Oem has the parts.

I had no luck with the impact wrench. The bolt spun. I ended up using a nut splitter and separating the nut into three pieces. Had to do that on both lights.

I'm saving the old lights for a day when I have less to do. I'll try to re-hab them then. I installed teardrop-shaped halogen lights for now. They don't look right because they're chrome, but they are close to the same size and shape as the originals. I'll paint 'em red on a warmer day!

Hi John , I had to put the lights in a tight bear hug and reach under to operate the impact . It probably looked a little bizarre from the road - a 265 lb guy with his arms hugging his tractor :-) Well , that and a good couple squirts of PB and they came off . I've got an old electric B&D 1/2" drive impact that works so well it'll twist my thumb off ( I've dislocated my thumb more times than I can remember )

Ya know what us old Harley riders say - "Chrome don't get ya home" . At least those of us that have been actually working on our own bikes for over twentyfive years do . So Pleeeaasseee get some red paint on those lights HAHA . Take care ...Randy

Randy, the one you have that is red inside sounds like an original. The black one is a replacement. The original lights were GUIDE, so I am thinking that even the black one had to have come from a dealer. Replacement parts are available, lenses, reflectors, and gaskets. Complete assemblies are also available, and while the prices for these may seem a bit high, in the long run it is the cheaper way to go if the lights you have are really bad.

Hi RustyFarmall , The lights aren't in too bad of shape . They could always be better . I think they'll outlive me anyway with a little tlc . I don't want to mix the old with the newer if it can be helped except for gaskets . The differences between the lights was so minimal , just the way the bump out for the stud was , and the way the reflector was grounded . Take care ...Randy

Hi Randy,

I polished up the reflectors on my H,then spray-painted them with chrome paint from a rattle-can.
The new rubber gaskets I got from steelwheelranch dot com. "Bout $3 or $4 each. HTH. Larry

I also repainted the reflectors on mine with "chrome" paint from a can. I don't think it's too durable, but it should last a long time since it is protected. I was happy with mine.

Hi SGT K , Do you think that the painted reflector is as bright as a silvered one ? I hooked my better light up to a battery last night with a charger on it at 10 amps and it didn't even light up the shop in the basement with the lights off . You remember that dull yellow glow of headlights of the past ( Pre-halogen ) ? That's what I had . To be clear all I did was hook up the reflector with a bulb in it . It didn't have the refractor (?) in front of it to aim the light . It is a good battery and it was fully charged . I think I had a 1118 bulb in it and not the 1133 that's supposed to be in it so there might have been a candlepower difference . Thanks . ...Randy
