Cast into the right side of the engine block on my 1951 Farmall Super A is the word "SPECIAL". Does anyone know what it mean? Has anyone ever seen this before?

Ed: Nice little unit you have there. I have thought of trying much the same. I'm thinking the U joint could allow one to raise the steering wheel a bit to make operators platform more comfortable.

Not sure about the word SPECIAL. Just wondering if it may have been a replacment block from IH, shortly after tractor was new. At that time, scrapyard engines would have been rather scarce. Could have been an accident, cracked block, etc. How does the engine serial number compare with tractor serial number? What are casting codes on engine? Also what are other casting codes? What is the engine block part number? These could answer your question.

Engine serial is right under No 1 plug on flat machined surface and is stamped rather than cast in place. Casting date codes are cast in place and numbers for month and day and letter for year. Have what looks like a round head blade screw cast between digets. Engine part number will be cast in place and 3/4" high numbers ending in R1, R2 or R3. Oh, the letter for 51 is W, 52 is X, 53 is Y. You can go both ways from that, V was not used.

Don't know about the special, but that is the first Super A I ever saw with Char-Lynn power steering set-up on it. Neat! What is the guage up to the right of it?

That is the factory mount for a water temp gage that I scavenged from a BN. This is my lawn mowing tractor and it used to get hot before I put a water pump on it. The front tires are loaded with used antifreeze and also have wheel weights on them so the power steering really makes it easy to steer. Even the better half will drive it once in awhile! :-)

The reason it would get hot maybe other problems. Putting the water pump on maybe a stop gap fix. I'd do a good engine flush. I'd use vinager and run it for about an hour then flush with water. I'll bet theres a bunch of junk in the rad/engine which will cause it to run hot.

The local Case/IH shop in my area won't change tractor tires that contain calcium. It's a problem getting rid of it. There's a man that does tractor tires and he recommends used antifreeze too. The Case/IH shop recommends all
customers with tractor tire flats to call him.
Hal
PS: Nice looking tractor too.
