I have a fast hitch sickle bar mower. It is the pitman type, with a 7' bar. Anybody know what the model number might be? Except for the fast hitch, it looks similar to a 25V or 27V.

Don: There were more than one fast hitch pitman type mower. Wayne indicates his being C-21, I know they existed but have never seen one. I've seen both C-24 and C-28. The main difference between 24 and 28 was the 24 was first used on the super C and had a pull rod running to rockshaft beside fuel tank. On that one the fast hitch just held the mower body at a fixed height and touch control rockahaft controlled the cutterbar. The 28 came later and had a pivot lever that lifted bar as one raised the hitch. That pivot lever went under the left fast hitch pull bar. The C-28 was also available as a 3 point hitch version, basically used that same pivot arm that went under left lower link of 3 point.

You may also encounter some differences depending on where you live. IH did build items like mowers, rakes, plows, etc. in more than one plant. Some plants built machines a bit different from others even though they used the same model number. I have never studied the mowers, but can tell you the US built plows were quite different from Hamilton ON Canada plows.

One other thing, all IH tractor pitman mowers, be they mounted, semimounted or trailing used the same basic mowing mechanism. Yes there were some improvments over the years, and some differences for the various configurations but the actual cutter bar and drive from pto used the same basic engineering.

Model numbers on these mowers have nothing to do with length of cutter bar. All IH mowers were available with different length bars. Some as short as 5' and some as long as 9'. There were 5', 6', 7' and 9' bars, not all were available for all mowers, but each model did have more than one choice.

Thanks Hugh. Your descriptions lead me to believe mine is a C-28 since it has the same lift mechanism you describe for it. I got the tractor, a 7' back blade, the sickle bar mower, a fast hitch bush hog type mower, and a three bottom plow. The tractor had only 1485 hours on it and hadn't been started for about 25 years when I got it. It is a sweet tractor. Now I know I have a model 311 plow, a C-28 sickle bar mower, but I have no idea about the other two implements. thanks again for your help.

Don: If this mower is with a group of implements that came new with a 350 it will be a C-28 mower. The earlier fast hitch mowers were all designed with Super C in mind and that separate lift device. There is actually very little difference in those mowers as that pivot arm you have just replaces the separate lift function. I would almost bet if one had the necessary parts a conversion could be done in a matter of hours.

This is the same one I have on my Super C Farmall.
It is a Model C-21 with a 7" cutter bar.

If it is 7' it would be the 27V. The 7 indicates the bar length.

The 25V had a 7' bar, but had a trailer wheel and wasn't fast hitch. Wasn't the 27V an updated version of the 25V, with a trailer wheel in the rear, and not fast hitch?
