Hi , How many different material's did they make belt pulley's from ? I'm familiar with paper and steel , did they make them from wood ? Also , how much should I expect to pay for one in Iowa ? I'm not looking for a high quality one just a good usable one . Thanks ....Randy

There's an outfit from TN called Paperpulleys.com that makes the old style laminated paper pulleys exactly like they were originally. I have gotten two restored pulleys from them and they are excellent. I asked them on the phone about care and feeding of these pulleys and they recommended periodically rubbing them down with boiled linseed oil to keep them from drying out too much. Also said that you should probably go ahead and remove them from the tractor if the tractor is to be parked outside all winter uncovered and store them inside. While the cast iron pulleys were easier to make, the paper pulleys are preferred as they have more of a texture with which to grab the belt making them harder to slip. I have a steel pulley on my 2N with a paper pulley on the cordwood saw and the paper pulley holds the belt a lot better. I also have an unrestored paper pulley for the tractor, but haven't gotten around to sending it off to the guys in TN yet.

Hi Jeb , That's some good info ! I got a paper pulley today for $10.00 . It's in pretty good condition . I wouldn't be afraid to use it if I had a reason to . I might try soaking it in the linseed oil because it's pretty dry . Otherwise , some paint on the metal and it's good to go ! Thank's ...Randy

Hey Randy;

Whereabouts in IA are you located? I used to be in NC but moved out here to Pella, IA about Labor Day weekend. Too bad I missed the Mt. Pleasant show. Sure wouldn't mind meeting other tractor enthusiasts if you're not too far away.

Jeb

Hi Jeb , Distance is relative ya know ? I lived in Edward's ,CO. before I moved to IA and traveling 100 miles for an afternoon visit to friend's was a weekly thing , now I go 30 miles just to go shopping but you probably do the same to Des Moines . I'm about 2 hours north just off 218 about 9 miles north and west of Waverly . Took a quick look at the atlas and it look's like Tama-Toledo area might be a halfway point on 63 . I don't know a lot about tractor's having only had them for a little over a year and a half , but yeah , I'm hooked ! Take care ...Randy

Re: -the real question was about material's ? in reply to Randy-IA, 12-17-2005 09:10:21
Hi , My wife doesn't agree but size doesn't matter :^\/) HAHA . I just wanted to know how many different types there were and maybe what kind of material the belt was made from for each kind . Example - the traditional leather belt with a paper type pulley or rubberized canvas on forged steel pulley . Thanks ...Randy

Belt pulley for what tractor and is it for pretty or are you going to use it for work. If it is for work then you need to decide what speed you need on the driven pulley

Hi Gene , The answer to that is neither . I just wanted one because my M has a belt pully drive on it . The tractor ain't pretty and I don't believe that it'll ever be used for pulley work but who knows ? Come to think of it there's a big belt drive grinder that's been sitting in the shop at work since I've worked there ( 17-1/2 yrs ) that's never been used in that time so now might be the time to drag it home and see what can be done with it :) The problem being that the pedestal look's to weigh about 500 lbs of cast iron without the grinding wheel's which are in the neighborhood of 15" diameter by 2-1/2" wide . It's probably not made for tractor belt work but instead for factory belt work where the power comes from water . Gettin long winded again - sorry . Take care ...Randy

Randy: I think those were forged steel, not cast iron.

no hugh they were cast iron, thats why every once in a while you will see one with a chunk out of it from being dropped. if you understand forging it would be near impossible to 'forge' a belt pulley. i work at a place called national machinery and they made the forging presses that international harvester used at there forging factory in kentucky to forge crankshafts, connecting rods, camshafts and other parts.

Randy: You're right, I know next to nothing about the forging process. I am a farmer, not a metals man.

The only belt pullies I ever had were paper on the H and metal on SA, 130 and 300. The only pulley I ever handled much was 300 pulley as I had to remove it once per year for other attachments. That tractor has been gone for close to 20 years, but I'm almost certain it had forged steel stamped on pulley. I never paid much attention to SA and 130 pullies. Sold the pulley and gear box off 130 years ago. Just removed pulley from SA two years ago to install a Woods mower. My brother has that pulley on his 230.

Now, it's winter up here and I'm not going chasing around old iron sheds to check this out. However I will find out when shows start next summer, and I will remember this thread.

Randy: I think my post is quite clear that 130 was a tractor model number. Perhaps we should check your comprehension, before we believe what know about forging steel.

By the way hugh , you do know that Randy Hall and I are different people don't you? You are blasting me for something that I didn't say . Thanks . All I did was joke about the way you worded your sentence . I haven't remarked on the forging process at all . I guess that makes me an idiot . Have a Happy holiday season ! ...Randy FROM IOWA not Randy Hall

My Hugh , just how old ARE you ? Let's see , you sold a pulley off a SA 130 year's ago so you had to be at least 20 year's old at that time so that makes you about 150 ? ROFLMAO ! Sorry I just had to do it ! You have a great holiday season ! That goes out all ! ...Randy

I bought a good used "paper" type pulley for $40. I think that's about average.

Hi LJ , I know that those type pulley's have been around for close to 50 year's but how do you suppose they deal with the weather if they really are made from paper ? Does it look like it was sealed with something ? Varnish or shellac maybe ? Thanks ...Randy
