How Long Does Diesel Fuel Keep?

Thinking about getting a diesel powered generator. How long does diesel fuel stay good? Besides keeping condensation out of the tank, are there additives or special filters that can be used to extend fuel life? What keeps longer, diesel or gasoline? I seem to recall a diesel holding tank tending to grow more biological "stuff" than a gasoline tank. Is that true?

If you're looking at a standby generator, consider propane. Yes, the tanks are a pain to handle, but propane doesn't degrade from sitting for years & years, plus it doesn't gum up the carb. I've been doing some research on the subject as we're looking at a generator put in a 5th wheel travel trailer.

Today's gas will really mess up an engine, I wouldn't let it sit in there more than a couple of months. I've had it mess up mowers and my tiller in 6 months or so. My dad left some in a generator for almost a year and it never ran right until I overhauled the carb. It had crud caked up in the bowl and the idle jet was corroded completely shut.

I've had good luck with Stabil the last year or so, with it you can probably get by with storing the gas for a year, but diesel will still last MUCH longer. you can get fuel additives for diesel with anti bacterial chemicals in it that will let it last longer. We've had diesel for a year and never had any problems with it at all.

My TD24 was "in hock" for at least 10 years while it was having an engine transplant. When it came time to start it I poured about 20 gallon of diesel in the tank which already had about 20 gallon of old fuel and once tuned it runs fine and usually starts on the first revolution. I poured some Stabil in it today, about 4 months too late.

Hi , I can say only from experience that diesel will outlast gas by years . Today's gas goes bad in a matter week's to a couple month's . We've got diesel in a part's crane that run's that hasn't been refilled in 5 years that was started and ran fine late last summer ( '05 ) . But don't try this at home ! I strongly suggest not keeping any fuel for a good engine over one year without an anti-fungal additive . Just follow the manufacturer's recommendation's . Hope this helps ...Randy

Previous posting tell of 5+ year old diesel being used to run tractors with minimal treatment- filter change, etc. Gas may be non usable after a years setting. Tow trucks that use salvage vehicles gas to run sometimes stall and have to get tanks pumped and fuel system purged to get back on road. Some posting on small engines/garden tractors note trouble starting after setting over winter with gas. I flush old gas and replace with new on tiller and motorcycles- past experience on dificulty starting. Brother will have JD430 diesel mower set over winter and just change filter and oil before first mowing- no problem. H farmall gets fresh gas in spring, 350d with full tank over winter just gets battery, filter check and oil before starting. Gas with treatments maybe a year, watch venting and temperature. Diesel maybe 5 or more years with minimal treatment. RN
