Well it's zero here in NE KS with 6 inches of new powdering white stuff, but the 300 Farmall says it's too cold for her to start. Maybe she'll change her mind later in the day. Just wondering who has experience installing some type of block heater either in the crankcase or the radiator on older Farmalls. How much trouble is it and how well do they work? Is there anything temporary that you can easily install and remove? Thanks

They make an electric battery blanket to heat the battery.I think they are like 100 or 150 watt heaters.MARK:

KsFarmer, I'm with Dave in CT. I have a magnetic heater that I stick on the oil pan of my B250, then I go do the chores for an hour and when I come back it will start every time , without ether. I like the magnetic heater because I can use it on an H or M if its really cold..TSC had them for around $24. I have put a blanket over a tractor in the shed and hung a 150 watt bulb down on the side of the block. The heat is just enough to keep oil viscous and some warmth to help start it..Mike in Exeter Ontario

My H didn't want to go this morning either, about 20 minutes on the battery charger and it was much more aggreeable about pushing snow.

Install an external tank heater. Does the job well. Drain the coolant from the engine block and plumb it in. ( Run a hose from the cylinder head(temp gage port) to the heater, and then to the engine block drain plug behind the carburator.)

I did this in -10 below weather last year to my dad"s H...took about 20 minutes to get it all set up. Now that darn tractor will start at -20 below... and I need a cab to keep warm!

I pipe them through the block. One end through an outlet in the side of the block and I put a Tee where the thermostate goes into the block. I use the circulating type from TSC for about $30.00. Its well worth it. They warm the block in about 30 minutes.

The fastest would be a magnetic block heater. Just stick it on the engine and plug it in. You could install a coolant tank heater but that involves plumbing the tank into the cooling system - not too bad a job. On my H it goes: hose from a nipple screwed into the carb side coolant drain port to inlet port of tank heater (mounted behind the carb on a bracket sticking up from the frame rail), then run a hose from the outlet port of tank heater around the back of the engine into a T nippled into the temp sending unit port - the sending unit goes into the other side of the T. This is the rig I'm familiar with and I've had nothing but summer starts since I started using it. Search the archives and you'll find posts with some other solutions.

Maybe but I clicked just once and it took _forever_ to go so I don't know where the problem lies. Perhaps I'll see with this post.

When you get the block warm the battery is still cold and not very productive. Any safe easy way to heat the battery short of removing it to a warm place? Appreicate any ideas. Dick Davis

You must've read my mind because later I thought, equally important is keeping the battery warm. I'm afraid I don't have an easy answer. Perhaps someday we'll receive news of some genious who figured out an easy way to run the heated coolant by the battery to get it up to temp before starting. Come to think of it, I should try something like that. Anyway, until then, I just keep the battery inside and make it as easy to hook up and secure (heavy rubber bungee cords) as possible. I'd be careful doing anything other than storing the battery indoors. Read the recent post with the subject 'Wow that was really scary' (or something like that) regarding battery fires.
