M runs poor at high rpms

I just bought a 1940 M last Tuesday. This past weekend I had a chance to really check it out. The engine runs good at an idle but at high revs it spits and spuddlers. It acts like one or two cylinders send unburned fuel into the exhuast-which ignites -sounds like a backfire. The engine definately lacks power. So far I've replaced points, spark plugs, wires, and did a carburetor rebuild. The carb kit was from Tractor Supply so it wasn't a good kit. The tractor was converted to a 12 volt system so its got a coil. I haven't checked the timing yet but will later this week. If anyone has any suggestions, I certainly would appreciate it. Thanks. --Tye

your coil is bad. had the same trouble with my h. if there was 12 volts put into the 6volt coil it will burn it out but the tractor will still rud but badly. ceck voltage to coils + side should only 6v. if its 12v change the coil and put a napa icr13 balist resistor in line with the + side of to coil. this shoul solve your problem

If it checks out in the "getting fuel" arena as others indicate try this.
With a point gap of .020, any slop in the Distributor cam shaft bearings can cause this rough running symptom. Wiggle the shaft that the roror slips onto. If it moves up and down, or sideways enough to detect the movement, it needs to be measured for real. The shaft should have no more than .0015" of movement up/down in/out. If bad,I would have the distributor rebushed, and run an electronic ignition. As the speed increases the centrifugal advance probably moves the shaft and things are getting outside operational acceptability. There is no way the timing can be even close with much cam angle variation. Some cylinders will be ok, but others will be way off (as much as 20-30 degrees. That is a great way to hole pistons.
Good luck on the repair. JimN

Your carburetor is set too lean. The load, or high idle adjustment screw should be set 3 full turns out, and your particular engine may require another 1 or 2 turns out. Did you check the carb float level? Are you getting sufficient fuel to the carb?

Lots of possibilities. Timeing may be the problem, did you set points to correct opeining? If the distributor cap is old, it could be cracked or leaking. If changed to 12 volt does it have a 12 volt coil or a resister ahead of the coil or neither? Another thing could be the advance in the distributor is stuck.

Could be timing you must time after R&R points because point gap changes dwell & dwell changes timing. Retarded timing will cause mis (spit & Spuder)under load & low power. Could be lean fuel condition. Good Luck
