Just what does that little spring do? 504 brakes

There is a spring inside the drum that attaches to the actuator and to a pin.This pin is almost like a rivet and has broke and now there is no where to attach this spring to.What would happen if I left it out.Thank you for your help

TWL The problem with the disk brakes is that they crab. Part of this is do to the actuator rotating some and that spring is there to help staop that. The 656 came with dowel pins so they can't rotate.
