I have a farmall H, carb has been cleaned and had new rebuild kit installed. Have to choke the tractor, till it floods, let off the choke and it will start, runs and then dies. Have the carb adjusted the way the instructions said to adjust it. Please help.

To Dave Bn, arod, El Toro, Dave_ID, old, Janicholson-- I got the H running. Took carb back apart, cleaned and put back together. Started up, started playing with choke in various positions and the tractor finally started running. Just to let you know the tractor hadn"t ran for around 5 years. Just want to think you guys- you"ve been very helpful.

Did you set the float level when you rebuilt the car? If so, how did yu set it? Dave.

Symptom of installing the needle valve in the carb UPSIDEDOWN.

Teasing the choke full out will open the valve enough to flood and provide fuel, though the moment you push it in, the fuel flow stops. As you mentioned you rebuilt the carb, perhaps you need to double check if you put that in upsidedown, the needle valve that rides on the float... You did not mention if the tractor ran fine before the rebuild, letting us know if there was no problem with the manifold or not. more info you give us the better.

Put your hand over the carburetor throat and see if you have good suction ( vacuum) there. Hal
PS: Open the main jet adjusting screw near the bottom of the carburetor. Did it run ok before this carburetor rebuild?

Check the fuel flow thru carb. Remove bottom screw, and allow fuel to run thru for about a minute, if flow stops, you have a problem with an obstruction from your gas tank

Either you missed something in the carb or you have a vacuum problem/bad manifold.

Intake manifold vacuum leak. either external, or internal.

They can crack allowing air (or exheaust into the intake) it also could be gasket problems at the head.

use a propane torch with the head taken off so it is just the pipe. (do this outside with care and no gasoline splashed about)
turn on the propane moderately (like you were using the torch) and direct the gas around the outsaide of the manifold while someone cranks the engine. If it fires up, you found the leak.

If not it may be internal Looking down the exhaust pipe (or with the pipe removed can find a crack)

good luck, let us know what the cure is

A missing venturi, or upside down, might do the deed as well as the ideas already given. Let us know!
