While searching for ignition parts for my Farmall 200 I have run across ads to convert the points to electronic ignition. Anyone have any experiences good or bad with this sort of thing?

Dave, Rootsy is 100% correct. I have electronic on my SMTA, and 300. The SMTA is a worker and show. The 300 is all work. It runs a TMR mixer, twice a day 7 days a week. The 300 has had electronic on for over 5 years. It gets over 700 hours on it per year, and i have'nt done any thing with electronics other than plugs and wires.

Electronic Ignition vs Points???? there is no comparison... if you use the tractor on a regular basis it is money well spent... I have the kit in a few of my tractors, both show and work... makes for a lot less headaches in starting, especially on damp days... ignition timing is much more stable. throttle response is improved...

Hi Dave, I have heard the same thing that when changing them to electronic to always go with the coil also. I dont know I think its a wase of $100.00 my self I can buy points and condensers cheap and as long as you get good ones and set properly with a resistor if your using twelve volts you could go for a long time. I can say that I wished they had them back when I had my 68 chevy truck with the straight 6 in it . But if you want to spend the money and never have to worry about them again probly. But I could think of better things to spend that kind of cash on. lol JON

Pertronix are good units, and the people at the factory are great to deal with. Pay attention to what the instructions say about using a non-pertronix coil. They say it has to have at least 1.5 ohms across the dist-power terminals. Mine did and ran fine for several years, but the ignition quit one night about 150 miles from home. I put my spare set of points back in and drove on. I ordered a new Pertronix and it propmptly burned up. Finally the car quit running with points, and I found that the coil was shorting, and the resistence had fallen to 0. I bought a new pertronix coil and they warranted the burned up ignitor, even though my coil burned it up.

If you are using the pertronix electronic kit, I have used them a couple of times on Fords, It sure made it start easier. I used the stock ford coils, but I have been told you are better off using the Pertronix flame thrower? coil with their electronic kit. Makes for a lot hotter spark.

The folks at YT say they don't sell the Pertronix coil because the stock coil works just fine. They don't even stock the Pertronix coil. Of course, Pertronix says different. It is the easier starting that I am after, so will give one a try. Thanks for all your comments.

Dave,
Keep in mind, if you go to the electronic ignition, you might as well buy a new coil, even if a stock one. Both of the ones I have put on have burnt up the coil within a hour of run time. the old coils just cannot handle this new fangled electonic stuff. So if I put another one on, I will just replace coil also.
