Could somebody with an 826 give me a total length measurement of the dipstick? Mine has been broken and brazed back together by the look of it and I think I've been overfilling the crankcase. Also, is the thermostat just an ordinary automotive type, or is it something special? Mine is missing and I'm gong to install one so it warms up and stays that way. That D-358 is really smoky until it warms up and I want it to warm up faster and stay warm. Many thanks.

The IH part number for the thermostat is 3059676r91. Same as the one on my 756, fits under the upper water outlet neck. Bought one for my 756 last spring, was around $20 from CNH. I think the dipstick would be the same on the 358 and 310, I will measure mine tommorrow and post back if no one else does.

Jim, if no one else measures one for you, I can Friday night. The thermostat should be a normal one. The 706's and early 756's with the German engine had a special thermostat, looked like a beer can coming off the front of the water manifold. I'm pretty sure they got away from that by the time the 826's came out. I know ours has a normal automotive type.
