I am wondering what to use to paint a muffler? I used high temp and stayed on till I shut the tractor off and cooled down then it came off in sheats. like something in a spray bomb because I need to get it painted friday evening for a show on saterday.

I used the same silver stuff others here have mentioned. I painted right on a new muffler, let it dry for an hour then ran the tractor for an hour to get it hot."the can said to cure it in an oven" I thought running it would do the same thing. Been on there five years and looks like new.

The best luck that I have had with mufflers is to empty a can of high temp paint inside the muffler. The high temp sliver on the outside burned off, but the muffler has not rusted out (after 5+ years). If the looks of the outside is important, take it off and repaint it once in a while.

When is the Albany show, and what is going on in Dalton ?

Paul, Are you painting new mufflers or an old one? If it is a new one I usually run the tractor to burn off any residue before painting. I have painted several mufflers with high temp aluminum and black and haven't had trouble with it flaking off. The only trouble I have had is that the muffler started rusting on the top pipe after several years for some reason. Must be where it gets the hottest. Roger

thanks for all the input, dont know why the high temp paint Ive been useing flakes off. I did all the prep work and tryed it on two different mufflers. I thought at first I wasnt etching it good enought with a wire brush so DA it was 80 grit then cleaned with wax and grease remover. I'll just have to find a different bland and try that

I painted the orginal IH muffler on my Super C a few months ago with an aluminum ceramic paint in a spray can. Bought it locally here in Missouri at O'Rielly's Auto Parts. For maximum protection and color retention it can be cured in your oven which even increases the durability. The tractor is used almost daily and it hasn't lost any of it's brillance to date. Can states it is good for the 1200 F. degree range.

I have several tractors that I painted the muffler with high temp aluminum paint from a spray can. Some of them were three years ago and they are still silver colored. Clean the rust off with a wire brush first.

I have been using hi-temp alum for years and no problems. The temps at the muffler arent 1000 deg unless something is wrong bad.

There is no such usable thing. Mufflers on Farm tractors reach 1000-1200 degrees F. This melts aluminum, galvanized metal, and all paints I've ever seen. The slickest solution is stainless steel, however they discolor and there advantage is they don"t rot away every 8 months. SS is also very pricy.

Paul: I hope you are going up to Dalton for the big IH show...I'll be the big guy running the Dyno. My tractors will be parked right there. I'll have our 41H, 43M, 49C, and 57 230. My dad's 51 super C and the working H will be somewhere around too. What are you bringing up? Come over and say hi sometime. There are a lot of tractors already lined up, so should be a great time.
