I have had my H for about 2 months now, used only on the weekends, but it took me 2 months to learn the following, an am still learning:

1.) Hard starting lessons:

Figure out the fuel shut off valve – I was starving mine for weeks then she just would not run no more until I gave this little do-hicky a twist

2.) Don’t leave 12V live going to a 6V coil

3.) don’t put the distributor in backwards 180 off -she didn’t like that

4.) don’t choke, no will go with any choke

Now she starts every time with the procedure that follows:

1.) fuel on
2.) tap tap tap on the carb
3.) choke off
4.) throttle 1/3
5.) switch on – resistor coil 12v
6.) ignition

Another little lesson; why does the lifall work sometimes but not all the time:::

answer: don’t push clutch in and expect the liftall to work …..gee this one I learned just today after changing the fluid, I thought I fix this problem ..but no matter what you do the liftall will not work in the clutch pedal is in

I was thinking of selling this gem, but now that I am so intimate with her …no way

PS: disregard that post I made on the JD form… I was just mad at her

If it starts without chokeing when cold the carburetor is set too rich or you have some other problem. A cold engine should need to be choked even in warm weather.

The guy that I bought my 544 from didn't know what the TA lever was for. He had an operators manual but had never read it. The first thing that I did when I bought it was to read the manual. It cleared up all sorts of things.

That does help if you have one, most of the time when you get one of them the manual is long gone.
