Hey everybody,I need some input on useing engine hoist to disassemble tractors and engins in small shop (15 by 30) I have a Farmall 230 with loader that I have used inside the shop but it has drawbacks.Im looking at AC Delco brand 2 ton engine hoist, Im thinking it might be a little light for working on and old M or 560 and the thing would be in the way in a small shop even folded up. What U all think ?

Thanks to everyone for great input, so I went back to farm store and bought the cherry picker for $170 plus tax last one they had. While we were loading it a man came over and told me about useing a home made version to lift 460 ford V8 and the picker collasped under the weight. The trouble I have is only guessing what things weigh. Well now I will have to pour more concrete as only half my working stall is poured rest gravel. Hal ,Ive thought of building one of those A frame cranes but instead I put in a stationary I beam with a trolley and one ton chain hoist. Im limited to sideway movement only but now I can use new cherry picker alone or in conjunction with beam. Jeff

If you're going to a lot of engine removals, you should have an A-Frame on wheels. We used an A-Frame with a chain hoist to handle our engines
when there was no overhead cranes available.

Northern Tool has one of these pictured in their new Master catalog on page 361. They call it a fixed steel Gantry Crane. You would need a lot of headroom for this.

If there's any Federal Government auction sale near you, they may have one of these that been declared surplus. They sell a lot of tools too.

Go out and buy or build the cherry picker. I've done time with having a loader tractor being my only source of lifting power....Unless this is a one-time project, you'll find so many uses in your shop for the cherry picker that you'll think it's great not to have to fire up the loader tractor every time you want to lift something.

By the way, there are heavier-duty cherry pickers available. If you lack the equipment/skills to build yourself, you could no doubt have a local welding shop build you one that would be WAY stronger than any of the cheap foreign-built ones that are commonly sold.

An engine hoist would be safer and lift more. for ur space you can put the hoist out side under a tarp. I have used our bobcat skid steer to take the engine out of our other bobcat skidsteer it worked good and acurate and i have used out 674 with the loader on it to take the body tub off my jeep. but i need a hoist. and it would be a lot safer. well good luck to ya. Use the hoist, but remember the 2 ton rating is with the arm retracted, so there are space considerations. I split a Super H with the hoist supporting the engine and the front bolster, it had all it wanted, as I could not retract the arm enough. Darn near tipped it over. I agree with the statement about alignment, the hoist can move up or down a fraction of an inch.

Northern Tool has a 2 ton engine hoist for $199.
I rented a knock down engine hoist that you assembled on the site. Took a few minutes to assemble. I think it was rated at 3 tons. Hal

A 2 ton engine hoist will lift more than your 240 loader.

If you are comparing a tractor with loader vs an engine hoist for lifting things, there is no comparison. The cherry picker works by lifting only a fraction of an inch at a time. The loader will jerk and be a nightmare to control. If you are pulling an engine, you will have a safer and easier time with the hoist. Those fold up ones dont take as much space up as you might think, just the footprint of the 4 caster wheels when the extended legs are raised.

Removed an engine with a tractor and loader. Installed engine with engine hoist.

Go with an engine hoist. Sure worked alot better and was safer too.
