I have an IH H4 magneto on a 1939 H that I cannot get any fire from. I have checked the coil, seems OK (.5 to .9 ohms on the primary and about 12K ohms on the secondary). I have replaced the condenser, points (set at .013) and the wire from the connection of the coil and condenser to the points. The coil cover "arm" seems to be making good contact with the secondary button on the coil. With the mag on the bench I cannot get any fire from the coil wire to ground. I am running out of ideas on this one, I have thoroughly checked that nothing is grounded preventing spark and still nothing. Any ideas would be very appreciated.

Hey guys IT'S FIXED!!!!!
I'm not really sure what it was, but I think it was grounding out somewhere. I disassembled and then reassembled very carefully putting black tape where any wiring was close to the housing to try to insulate. I put the coil wire on and held it close to the grounding screw and had a nice blue spark about 1/4" long. Put the mag on the tractor and it turned over 1 or 2 times and then started running. Thanks for all of your help on this one.

Check those magnets for magnetism with a screwdriver. Could be the problem. Hal

Thanks MagMan and El Toro for your quick response. I can hold onto the coil wire and still nothing. The coil button is pointed toward the front a little (about 15 deg.) and seems to make good contact with the coil cover "arm". I am trying to achieve spark between the coil wire and the ground screw-nut that threads onto the condenser, as well as other places on the tractor, but to no avail. Still scratching my head on this one. Could the magnet have lost its magic? If so some advice on remagnetizing please. I will continue checking for a hidden ground as I am suspecting this to be the problem more and more. If you happen to think of something else please let me know. Also, any other ways of checking each individual part would always be helpful to everyone. Thanks again for all of your help, I will keep you posted on my progress and what happened to be the culprit.

Well usally the culprits are the bakelight washers. Where the wires hook up you have to make sure that nothing is getting close to the aluminum check for cracks in the wire insulation where it goes into the coil, Is the brass washer under the screw that holds the point base down? I have never seen the internal rotor on a J4 or H4 loose its charge unless it was a special cirumstance. So I really highly doubt it will be that.I have had a few that I scratch my head over also and I have rebuilt a lot of them every once in a while you get one that just defys the odds but I have not had any beat me yet. Try a new condenser.Clean inbetween the points with some berrymans or equivelent and file never sand the points. Let me know how you make out. JON

Inspected the bakelite washer and it is broken. Do you know where I can get a new one? I don"t know if this is the only problem, but it sure needs replaced. Does the brass washer go between the stationary point and the screw or between the stationary point and the housing? I do not have a brass washer in either place.

You can probly order a washer from the casedealer I cant remember the one online is it Cng or something like Carter and greunwald. It goes on the screw like a regular washer would. You look at it and you will say what will that do but believe me it works sometimes.

Yea dont be afraid of them put your finger on the coil wire hole and turn it over back ward and see if you feel anything It should not really zap you that way. there has been known to get bad condensers . also it could be grounded out in many places that you would not even think of. I have seen them all . On the coil you should check from the wire that goes to the condenser or the ground strap to the coil nub and you should have between 10.7 and 13 for a good coil. The higher the better. But it looks like you have done that. Is the nub on the coil pointing toward the fron a little and not straight up?Are you testing it to the ground screw on the side of the mag for your spark? If you need more help let me know. JON

You should pass a point file through those points.
Have you held on to the coil wire when snapping the impuse coupling? If it fires very faintly I would replace the coil. The MagMan that posts on here rebuilds those IH mags. He may see your posting. Hal

PS: If that's the original mag, 66 years isn't bad and may need a rebuild.
