My M has/had a knuckle ahead of the power steering motor. I damaged it while trying to remove it. @#$%&*@ Where might I find a replacement? Do I even need a knuckle? The power steering motor seems rigid and the front bolster is not going to move. In other words, can I use a solid connection? Does your M Power Steering have a knuckle ahead of the motor?

When I put power steering on my SMTA i had a sliding connection between the PS motor and the steering shaft. This lasted about two years and wore to the point that I lost steering control. Lukily I was in the hayfield and not on the road. The purpose of the sliding connection was for use with a loader so the trator could flex and the steering shaft wouldn't be rigid. After losing steering I welded the sliding shaft and now my shaft is solid. it has been this way for over two years and it has not caused any problems. As long as the motor output is in align with the steering gear I don't see any reason not to have it solid.

Both my M"s have the splined sliders on them. IF nothing on the tractor flexes, you can make them solid. However, IF something moves, you could have problems because that shaft is going to take all the movement. Harley

Harley,

Have you checked your splined sliders? That's what I had on my SMTA and the inner sliders splines wore down and allowed it to slip causing a loss in steering. Like I said in my earlier post it only lasted 2 years.

Yep, know what you mean. I have a loader on one and pulled the shaft completely out of the splined end. Since that was a problem that had to be cause by something, I got to looking and found the root of the trouble. The loader had worked the front bolster bolts loose and the whole front end was working forward and backward everytime I raised the loader. Fixed it. Took the front mounts of the Westendorf off one at a time, inserted a pre-drilled 1/4 inch plate between the mount and the tractor frame from the front of the bolster back about a foot and a half, did both sides, tightened the beJesus out of the bolts, added some more in the holes in the frame, and wala, no more movement. Where there's a will there's a way. Harley

I'm guessing tightening the torsion tube bolts (a good idea in any event) would contribute to making nothing in the tractor flex. I'm only bringing this up because I just tightened them on my H and I'm sure I had some 'flexing' going on before I did it.

When I put the power steering on my SMTA, I was using a loader on it and yes there was flexing. Since I stopped using my SMTA for the loader I felt it was not a problem, and it hasn't, making the shaft rigid.
