Stopped by my mom"s this afternoon and had a chat with her landlord. He has a Super A with a stuck engine. He has been using this tractor regularily and ran fine when he used it a few days back. Now it won"t turn with either the starter or the crank. He admitted not knowing alot about tractors ,but says there"s gas in the oil. What are the possible ways for gas to enter the crankcase? Would an engine stick from raw gas setting in the cylinders in just a couple days? We used have a Super A years ago and never turned the gas off when not in use. Thanks, jim

Gas in the oil is most of the time caused by a float/needle valve problem, carb may need to be rebuilt. If he ran it with the gas/oil mixed it could have locked it up. You might try filling the cylinders with tranny fluid and see what happens. Also the starter may be the problem. Pull the starter off and see it you can turn it over with the hand crank. Either way I would put some tranny fluid in the cylinders it will never hurt a thing but might help a lot

Thanks old....I didn't look at it, but I did tell him to put some ATF in each of the cylinders and let it sit for a couple days.

I'd also tell him to pull the starter and see if it would turn over then, seen that to many times

Gasoline in the engine comes in through the intake. fills everything till the tank is empty. It will definately lock up the motor (hydraulic lock) gasoline is not compressable. Do not try to start it!!! pull the plugs and drain the oil. Fix float issue.!!! disconnect coil/mag at the low voltage terminals. Crank over engine (crank is preferable)
Fill with new oil and you are good to go.
It is almost 100% likely the cause. If it is cranked with plugs in it can bend rods.

You tell me how the gas gravity from the tank DOWN to the carb then goes UP 3in into the cyclinders. Have been around these tractors since 1947 and have never seen gas go up from the tank into the cyclinder thru the carb. Please enlighten me.

It doesn't make since but I have seen it in more then one engine. The way it does it is fills up the carb and intake tube to the point that it goes up and in to the engine.

I would think it would have to fill the air cleaner also in order for it to fill the cylinders.

As I said I don't understand how it does it but it will. For all I know maybe it evaperates and then condenses but I do know that it happens and its bad news for an engine. I've seen it on Farmalls, Fords, JDs etc

This can happen even with a low fuel level in the tank. The tank is always higher than the carb, and the air passages (including the air cleaner tubes) fill up with gasoline. They do not need to fill till the fuel enters the combustion chamber. (it can if the tank is topped up) The first 1/2 revolution cranking of the engine draws in the slug of fuel and locks the system. I hope this clears up reality.
Thanks for listening Jim Nicholson
