F20 Connecting Rod Inserts

Hi guys -

Trying to figure out what size bearing inserts to get for my F20 connecting rods.

My father-in-law took the crank in and the rod journals were out-of-round, so they turned them down to 2.230.

Am not sure I'm reading the "sizes & capacities" in the I&T manual correctly. There's an entry for "crankshaft journal" w/a footnote that ball bearings are used. So this must be for the mains. Then there's an entry of 2.2495 for "crankpin diameter." Is this for the connecting rod journals?

What size bearing inserts would I need? Also, are there shims for the caps?

Thanks!

Hi Dan, Here's a number in IA for man that may have some some used F20 used .020" undersize bearings. His name is Darrell Alderson and the number is 641-624-2275. Good Luck, Hal

Did this engine have removable rod inserts or were they babbitted bearings? A big difference
since your crankshaft has been ground undersize.

I think you need .020" undersize bearings and then
you would need to shim to obtain the correct clearance. Check with your local machine shop that ground your shaft undersize. They can probably get you the correct inserts and know the correct clearance on your bearings. This is very important, they need enough clearance for lubrication. Hal

Forgot to mention to keep the same thickness of shims on each side, if possible. A thousandth or 2 difference should be OK. Again, just my 2 cents worth.

Not sure if inserts are available. Believe that .005 is the correct clearance for the rods and yes, shims are used to adjust the clearance. You can take a piece of shafting and turn it to the 2.23 dia and scrape the rods and caps round in order to fit. Use some prussian blue and mix it with vaseline and keep fitting the shaft to the rods and caps. You will be able to see the high spots and keep scraping the high spots down until you get most of a full bearing area where the areas are all blue. Had a similiar problem with my 29 regular and did the same. By "spotting" with the blueing compound, you will be able to make the rods fit the crank. Be careful and take your time and do not take a lot of the babbitt off the ends of the rod or cap. Good luck and hope this helps you and does not confuse you even more. If you find a place for inserts, please post it. Thanks for listening and others may have other ideas, but this worked for me. I took this route because of low RPM and also limited use. At least my rods are round and you should be able to do the same. JIM in ILL.
