Greetings, my '53 is not firing on #4 cylinder. I have tried new plugs, coil, plug leads and replaced condenser and points. Its getting good spark and starts real easy. What's next? Check valve clearance on #4? Thanks. Stan

Take #4 plug and change places with another cycl. Would not be the first time there was a bad plug. Happens sometimes.

Next priority is to do a compression test on the #4 cylinder. If low compared to specs or the other cyls, it will sound like it is missing even if it was firing. Burnt valve would be the most likely cause. Chk that it misses on both low and high power settings. A miss at idle but firing at power indicates an intake leak. If compressions are good on all four, then the distributor cap is worth checking for cracks, especially at #4. Try substituting another cap. All the best.

Takes 3 things to make any cylinder to fire, fuel, spark and compression. I'd do a compression test. If # 4 has little to no compression theres your problem. Which maybe valves or ring or both

You didn't mention the cap or the rotor. Also, your distributer shaft could be worn, so that the rotor and the #4 terminal don't have the proper clearance. Yes a bad valve or improper clearence can cause the same symptoms. In that case, though, the #4 plug should still be firing. You can take it out, ground it and check.

Also you could have a problem with your head gasket. I have a Super C that was not running right and checked all of the things that have been mentioned. Everything checked ok, but my head gasket was blown between two adjacent cylinders. Replaced this and it ran great.
