Thanks to Bigdog and Hal for your responce to my Cub quiting problem. I am sure it was a dead condensor and when I installed the new one I got the lead against the dist, but it's running now.Next question, shouldn't the distributor be mounted to the engine so the #1 plug wire will be at the one oclock to time it correctly? This one is more like eleven Oclock. I am not satisfied with the way it runs now. Thanks Ed

Ed:

If you go to the url below which is the Cub Manual Server you will have access to a few helpful bits of information.

The Blue Ribbon Service Manual - GSS-1012 Electrical Equipment, the GSS-1411 Service Manual for Cubs and Lo-Boy Tractors, GSS-1356 Engine tun-up Specifications manuals are there.

Also, the link to a series of helpful articles by H.L. Chauvin are there. They provide trouble shooting and informative tricks and techniques in a humourous way that is entertaining as well as informative.

This should be of value as you work this through. Also, there is a section called Maintenance Tips and Techniques which is a series of articles by some of our very knowledgeable and helpful Cub-a-holic bretheren...

Hope this helps

Your rotor should be aligned with NO 1 plug wire
in the cap when No1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke and when the notch on your pulley is aligned with pointer. You must be very close since it is running.

Pull No1 plug and hold your thumb over the hole while someone slowly cranks over the engine, by
hand would be the best. You can check that timing with a timing light and see where your
timing mark is at now. I have an inductive light
that you just clip over the plug wire, hook power
leads to battery and start engine, if off slightly just rotate distr until pulley notch is
aligned with pointer. Hal
