A friend came over to help me yesterday since I only have 1 good arm now and am still hurting in the back and tail bone areas. He wants to get the F-12 going so bad so after soaking the motor for two weeks with the plugs out we gave it an extra tug on the crank and over she went. Now how much cleaning out of the cylinders should I do before trying to start? We turned it over a lot while putting in small amounts of mystery oil and it seems to be smooth with no rough places in the strokes. Also am totally ignorant on the setting of the rod which controls the spark on the rear of the mag. My friend touched the plug wire while checking and got one heck of a jolt. Sorry about these elementary questions but this tractor was before my time and the manuals are not ordered yet and we are trying to make our annual show here on August 3-6. Thanks for your help. Migraine

Hi migraine, glad to hear you're getting back in the saddle again, even if it's slowly.
I think that if it was my tractor, I would would try to start it without much further work on it if it feels smooth. I suppose the very safest thing to do would be to pull the head and pan off, but I couldn't resist starting it before going through all that. I did it to an H that was tight and it runs great still, 12 years later.
Does this have the IH F-4 mag on it? If so, I believe that turning the spark advance rod all the way to the left kills the spark, then slightly to the right is full retard, the further to the right you go, the more advance you get. When starting, it should be in the retard position. Make sure the impulse coupling trips. Others can correct me if I'm wrong.

On the newer F-12 with IHC engine, when the spark advace lever is about straight up and down, is the retarded, or crank me position. Turn it counterclockwise (left) and it grounds out the magneto. After the engine is running turn it clockwise to advance the spark. Also on the newer F-12, the choker is backwards. Push it in to choke the engine, and pull it out to run. I don"t know which way yours is but you might want to check. The one we had, had a cast iron bulb that came threw the hood, fuel lines were hooked into it. It had a fuel pump, and 1/4 miles of lines. By taking a plug out of that cast iron thing a me jig, you could fill the carburetor and fuel lines with gasoline, and save a lot of cranking. I"ve never seen a F-12 with Wauksha, just pictures so I don"t know if I helping you any or not. Glad you are getting better and out into circulation. Delbert from Lincoln

Thanks guys. Yes when we crank it over I hear the loud clicking from the mag, assume that is the impulse you are talking about. When the former party painted it about 8 years ago, no decals were put on around the spark control rod so was sort of shooting in the dark. We'll try it in the retard mode with new plugs and shoot a little gas in the carb with no choke and see if we get it to fire. The oil thats in it is very clean so will try to run for a bit to get warm and drop it out. Thanks. Migraine
