Can someone tell me how to tell if my 1963 706 has a factory or after market 3 pt hitch. I'm not sure what I have but when I try to hook up my 3pt mower and blade there is not enough adjustment space for a top link. I could send a photo of what I have if anyone is willing to take the time to help me id it. Thanks

save yourself a lot of headaches and just buy a Worksaver 2 pt conversion. They have a website www.worksaver.com

Hi Uncle Willy, back in the late 50's we had a 3pt converter like yours for our 300U. The top link was a bar like yours but with many holes drilled in it. The adjustment for the top link was to move 1 bolt hole closer or farther away from the tractor. Wasn't a very fine adjust as the holes were about 1" on center and on a 3 furrow plow the rear furrow could be either in or out of the ground to much. Also some implements did not have space for the top link bar to extend pass the top link bolt hole(ferguson rake) so would have to turn the bar around so long end was towards the tractor.

We had a device like this when I was growing up. It is a 2pt to 3pt conversion. You won't be able to use the normal top link, but there is no reason to. You should have a shorter link that should work OK. Looks like the pictures show one. The one we used to have worked OK, except that it did not always lift implements high enough. I think you will find that most 2pt to 3pt conversion leave something to be desired. We found it easiest to leave the conversion connected to the implement and disconnect using the normal 2 pt prongs. This works OK unless you use several implements frequently. As I recall, if you plan to change implements disconnect the conversion from the implement before moving to the new implement. The conversion is probably to cumbersome to move without being mounted on the tractor.

OK Thanks to you and everyone who responded. I have been using it with the "link" you see in the photo. Looks like I have several options to consider.

The more I remember about the one we had, the top link was adjustable. You should be able to fabricate something. It was like a piece of all-thread with a U-shaped bracket on each end. The "U" brackets each had a pin inserted, one for the implement (the normal top hitch) and the other into the top of the hitch conversion. The all-thread provided some adjustment for connecting the equipment and/or to adjust the equipment height somewhat the same as the normal link. You have already figured out you will not have the same amount of adjustments. So goes trying to convert 2 pt to 3 pt.

That is definately some sort of aftermarket add-on. It looks like your 706 does have the fast hitch, the rest of that stuff has been added on. I am not educated enough on the fast hitch/3 point conversions to be able to give you a solid answer, but it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with something that will work for you.

What do you mean by, "not enough adjustment space for a top link?"

The thing about it is, I don't think there's such a thing as an "aftermarket" 3pt hitch for a 706 because you can easily convert it from fast hitch using factory parts.

Nat - I think they did make an aftermarket hitch because I believe my 706 has one. It operates on two decent size hydraulic cylinders that plug into the remote. My guess is that it came from the factory w/ only a drawbar, no fast hitch or three point. There's part of an old sticker on it that I believe said International - so maybe it was a dealer add on?

Willy - does that sound like yours? I haven't ever had problems adjusting the top link, but all I've had hooked up to it was a blade though.

Hi - I think I know what you've got - I'm no expert but judging from what I see in that last photo, you do have the three point hitch already in place - note the link that has the lever to rotate it to fit onto a plow. I say this because at the AGCO dealership I go to down in Jeffersonville, OH, they have a 706 there with a fast-hitch on it, but it also has the rockshaft to be converted to a 3 point provided you purchase the linkage from the arms that extend from the rockshaft to the linkage that you connect the implement to. So, IMHO all you have to do is go visit a junk yard or a Case IH dealer to get the prongs that fit into where that contraption is in place right now (at the bottom of the linkage arms) and get a bracket for the top link and you should be good to go. The best way to tell if you have a 3-point or one ready to go is if it has two levers on the right hand side of your seat - one for draft control and draft response - the one at the AGCO dealer has this.

Just to reinterate, IMHO you've got a 3 point already, you just have to get the right parts to complete it which are the prongs that have the bearings at the end and the top link bracket. If you can't get to a Case IH dealer, try your friendly junk yard.

I hope this helps!

Christos

i have to agree with rusty....you have the two point fast hitch with something homemade/aftermarket stuck into it. if you chose to keep the setup it shouldn't be too hard to fabricate something to give you adjustment.

Why not just get a regular top link? It looks like it would be much easier to adjust. Are you familiar w/ them?

Yes, I have the top link I use with my Ferguson but with this setup on the 706 there are only a few inches between the inplement and where the top link attaches. I'm thinking the bottom arms need to be extended. Does that sound right?

if you really want to use the top link then you need to cut the top part of that hitch off, just leave the the two inserts on the bottom. there is a plate that will bolt to the diffy that will have the holes to attach the top link then. that plate can be found in junk yards.

I see what you're saying now. Actually I would think the top mount needs to be moved back. Usually the top link mounts closer to the back of the tractor. It would probably be easier to fab something to move the top mount back rather than the arms forward.
