Little history: My dad, 92!, asked me, 59 and retired, to plant wheat this fall on 160 acres. I've done some work for him when young, but am in no way very knowledgeable about equipment. Currently the land is operated under lease.

I just personally restored and got very intimate with his 400D. It now, for the first time in 10 years, runs well and looks good. But, using it for disking and planting has me worried since you can't get parts readily or at all. I would prepare the land and plant, then contract the fertilizing, harvesting, etc. I know there is little money in it, only peace of mind and the smell of the land. Dad still has his disk and 2 point hitch plow, but no planter.

Given the above, which tractor (with hydraulics) would would you recommend? I may also eventually restore this one.

Well, PART of my math was ok. I meant to figure the cost of the fuel to do the job. New revised estimate would be 165 dollars, (3gph,12 foot disc, 2$ per gal). That's not so bad. Maybe rig a drag/harrow behind the disc. I pull a ten foot two section drag around with a 350 4 wheeler.

Hi guys i would use the 400D. The most fuel efficent tractor you will ever find. I have a 450 D that i cut hay with. I have a 499 New Holland hydraswing haybine. The 450 works great on that.

That 400 will do the job and I bet if it could talk would tell you that it is ready to have some fun. Nothing wrong with that tractor doing the job. Besides it will give your dad a lot of pride seeing you take that tractor out.

Man, you guys are the BEST. This is something I've wanted to do for years, and by darn, going to do it with the 400D.

Recently, I have been using the grader blade on the thing, turning the dirt, smelling the mix of the dirt and diesel exhaust, and it just INSTANTLY brought back memories of the great times we had 30+ years ago. THAT is what I want more than anything. Nothing better for me than moving along on that tractor and making it work.

And you're right, dad is having a blast, watching me get the old tractor fixed up. He can hardly move, but this is putting a spark back in him. He's a tough dude, still mowing his 1+ acre lawn with his riding mower -- even at 92.

Now, need to find a planter!

Thanks to all of you.

You're darned right,

Nobody said you have to operate 2000 plus acres to enjoy it. I'm doing the same darned thing, Frank.

Went out and found a little 11 or 12 foot drill to plant with and it is going to take me forever to stuff 'er in the ground. Aw shucks. :>)

I would recommend the tractor you have....

I have a Ferguson TO-20 and a International 300U

Fergie is 24hp (or so)
300U is 44hp (or so)

Could do that 160 acres with either of them just fine (and did many years ago with nothing larger than a 8n Ford).

Just use that 400 and more than likely you can buy an old planter, etc. cheaper than getting someone else to do it for you.

And you'll have way more fun. I like the suggestion someone had about taking some video of you out there to keep. Get your Dad on it for a row or two if he can... It'll keep him young.

A friend of mine has about 10 buddies with old tractors come over once a year for "plow day". I go nuts with the old 650LP. Plowed for 6hrs and even did the fence row. So what if it scratched it. Just a spray can away from new again. Unless you spent thousands to paint her up, the old girl is just waiting for the chance to get dirty. Hell, put up a plow day and make some new friends at the same time. The wives had a picknic lunch for break time and some good pies!! Wow, it was fun

Why not use what you have and enjoy using it? Will probably be enjoyable for both you and your Dad. If you don't want to do it a newer, bigger tractor won't help but you will be able to spend more money.

Amen to that Bill,

I'd love to have one of those old 400Ds once again. They were a heck of a workhorse and actually a lot of fun to operate.

Had their own distinct sound too. Best part was throwin' that shuttle. :>)

Heck, I'd do it just for the fun of it. Who cares how long it takes to make a pass. Nothing better than driving a newly restored tractor. That 400 diesel should sip the fuel all day, not guzzle it like my 300 gas does.

Frank,
I can say I understand you wanting to keep the old machine in nice condition, but that's like a gun you never shoot - what good is it to just look at it. I'd use the tractor and bring your Dad out there with you. Have him set in the truck with AC (if needed) or video tape the old gal "just-a-git'n-it!!

If you have the 'ol 400 up and in good shape now I would use it. 160 acres is just about the size of farm that these tractors were targeted for. Might take you about 3 to 4 days to work the ground down, and maybe another 3 to 4 days to get it seeded. Personally I think it sounds like fun. Git-er-done.

I'll bet Dad has an old 16 foot disc. That's one acre for 1/2 mile length (give or take). Assume 4 mph passes . Do the math. 7.5 minutes per pass, 160 passes, got the picture? Your old outfit is going to use about 360 gals of fuel just to disc it once. Why not cash rent the farm, and make a deal with the renter that you get to "help" him on the place? Or cruise the county for good looking wheat, now is the best time, and get a share cantract with that operator. The price of fuel has made any tractor with less than 140 hp obsolete for anything other than "hobby farming". (less than 40acres)

Assuming 1/2 mile with a 16' disc = 1 acre.
At 4 MPH it will take 7.5 minutes per acre.
7.5 X 160 acres = 1200 minutes = 20 hrs.
3 gal per hour = 60 gals for 160 acres you can't do it any cheaper with a big tractor because they don't run anywhere near as efficient per acre as the 400D.

Gordo,

I read your post about hobby farming and my first reaction was a two word exclamation, the second word being 'you'. I believe that there is usually an exclamation point after it. This ain't no hobby.

You don't need 3000 acres and a government check to make a living farming, even today, if your return is not pennies on the acre. My H and SC do just fine for me.

Our neighbor runs a little over 400 acres, raises corn, beans, oats and alfalfa, and just quit milking a couple years ago. He makes a decent living and does not have a tractor over 70 HP.

Ahem. The 400D is plenty to do 160 acres of wheat.

360 Gallons to disk 160 acres, don't think so. I filled up my 4630 and disked 158 this year on one tank-60 gallons. That old 400 cant be 6x worse on fuel than mine.

I have to disagree on you 150hp statement too. If running no-till I could easily farm 500 acres with 1 100hp tractor. Shoot my grandfather farmed 650 acres with 2 4020's-and that was multi-pass tillage and 2x with cultivator.

A 400D in good shape will use about 2 gal of D an hour under a max. pull, that is 40 gal per 160 acres according to your figures.

Comon' Gordo,

360 gallons of diesel fuel to disc it once? I was born at night, but it wasn't last night. :>)

I'd definitely use something newer, 706/806, 756/856/826. Even a 656/666/686 would pull anything better than Your 400D would. I'd try to stay with a diesel tractor, even with the prediction of VERY expensive fuel this fall, with a gas tractor You'll burn WAY more fuel to do the same work, and You'll burn a LOT of fuel/gas discing 160 acres. You didn't mention what crop is on the ground now but wheat doesn't need much soil preparation to grow. A good discing, and either drill the seed in or even use a broadcast seeder and just lightly re-disc. I suspect Your Dad wants the wheat as a cover crop for some type of hay.

Doc,

Why? What's wrong with the 400D? It doesn't get much simpler than throwin' a little wheat in the ground, does it?

Heck, I'd use that old tractor if the disc isn't too big fer it.

A single gang 16"disk should be about right for the 400d. If it is a tandem that would be pushing it. What do you have for a plow. Here again the 400d would handle 3-16"s either fast hitch or pull type. Fuel use is a guess. Mabe max.of 3.5-4 gph.

The plow is 3-16". Dad calls the disk a tandem disk. It has 2 rows of offset disks, guessing it's about 12' wide, hydraulic operated.

I use to pull a 7 ft. Roam offset with a 400D all it needed, 2 gal an hour. 460D on same plow 2 1/4 gal an hr. still all it needed. pulled a 12 ft tandom disc played with it, tied a 13 ft. double drag behind that didn't play as much.
