I have a 300 row crop that has governor problems. When it starts, it runs well, but as soon as you open the throttle, the engine races, and won't idle. I tried adjusting the governor according to the IT book. I took the breather cap off, and noticed that the linkage kind of sticks in the accelerated posiion. If you give it a shove, it will go down ok. bit not without the shove. Any ideas where it is likely catching or binding or ???

In your governor, the spring accelerates the engine and the fly weights slow it down. If it won't return to idle then is sounds like there is a mechanical bind somewhere. Pull the cover off of the side and make sure the thrust bearing and sleeve slide on the shaft easily. The other place to check is the pivot yoke needle bearings. There should be no sign of binding as you move it up and down by hand. Also make sure the weights can swing freely. I have seen the rod that weight swivels on come loose and cause binding.

Take the cover off and look inside, sounds like maybe the spring is stretched or broken. Might have some other problems as well, but you won't know until you look.
