460D Injection Pump Timing

I have the rebuilt injection pump back on the 460. I am not sure I have the timing right though. I pulled the nozzles out for testing. The glow plugs and inectors all come out together as one piece as the glow plugs are in the nozzles. We rotated the engine until the #1 cylinder (front cyl) was up. I stuck a wire through the hole to determine when the cylinder reached the high point.

Problem is, I can"t find any timing marks on the crankshaft to tell if it is on the right stroke or not. It may not be on the compression stroke. Once the cylinder was up, I matched up the timing marks on the pump and mounted it.

I am taking the injectors in for testing today. If it is on the wrong stroke, could it damage the pump, or would it just not start? I don"t want to lock up the pump. I figure if it will not start, I could back off the pump and rotate the engine until the cylinder comes up again and remount the pump.

I checked and can"t locate any timing marks on the flywheel. Thanks.

Simple place a finger lightly over the #1 glow plug hole while someone bars the engine over. You will feel air pressure coming out of the hole as the piston is coming up on the firing stroke. When TDC is passed, you will feel a suction as the piston is dropping. TDC on the firing stroke is at the exact point between the ending of the air blowing out, and the beginning of air being sucked in.

Removing the glow plug should be easier than removing the valve cover (if it is not already off.)

Ron if you get it 180 degrees out it will start by pulling it anyway, but won't have any power. Follow Aces advice.

Ron it should not damage the pump, but if you look at the rocker arms for #1 cylinder if you are on TDC compression strock both arms should be loose it you are 180 degrees out the intake should be starting to open for intake.

From what I have read, I am looking for the spot where the cylinder is up (TDC)and both of the valves are closed; the point right after the compression stroke and right before the injection and combustion stroke (I think).

If both of the valves should be closed, couldn't I test the current position by blowing air into the cylinder? If the cylinder is sealed (both valves closed), it should pretty much hold air. If it were at the opposite TDC, the air would flow out because the intake valve would be open. Would this test work?

Or, since it won't damage the pump, if it runs, but no power, I guess I could back off the pump and rotate it 180 degrees to the other TDC. It would be nice to have it close to the right spot though by the time it is ready to go. Currently, the injectors are in the shop for testing.
