on my IH 454 the battery goes flat when it rains. I have changed the battery several times.I wired this tractor by myself.it had had an electrical fire before I got it. so all I have is the alternator to the battery the battery to the starter(+).battery to ground (-).battery to key switch.key to starter and off accesories on the key I have an electric fuel pump. so why do I get a flat battery when it rains

If this only happens when it rains then the water is leaking into something and drawing power. Assuming you have an alternator that has an internal regulator, there is a small amperage draw from the battery to the alternator even when shut off (on the order of .01 amp). This power runs the voltage standard part of the regulator and the power loss is normally not a factor. However, if water is somehow getting into the regulator part of the alternator it could cause an increased power loss from the battery. The way to check this would be to hook an ammeter between the battery and the alternator and watch it when it rains. This loss may not show up on your tractor's ammeter depending on how it's wired.

Could a good cleanup be helpful? Corrosion, salts from battery, dust & dirt can be conductive when damp. Wouldn"t hurt to take battery out, clean it up, and clean wiring too while you"re at it.

Hi Joe, do you own a volt meter ? If not go to your local auto parts store and buy a 12V lamp and socket with leads on it. There used to be a replacement socket that you could get for the side marker lights on the older Olds & Chevs that took a 169? lamp and had a socket with two leads on it.

The next time it rains, remove the + cable from the + battery terminal and connect one lead of the above lamp and socket to the + cable and the other lead to the + battery terminal. If you have leakage current the lamp will glow. Now start disconnecting the electrical wiring until the lamp stops glowing. Start at the farthest piont like alternator and work toward battery.

Good luck
