My Super C till now has never had an oil pressre problem. I mostly just take it to shows in the summer and push snow with it in the winter. I have used it 10 hrs non stop in the winter and the oil pressure always stays in the middle of the gauge. The kind with the red zone on it. No numbers. The last two weeks I have used it hard on 90 + degree days spreading dirt and gravle with the rear blade. As long as I have the throttle at least half open the pressure is fine. As soon as I idle it down it drops right to the very edge of the red zone. Uuuuugh! I use 30wt in it. It's not low. It use's no oil as far as I can tell. It smokes a little blue when I start it if it has sat for a few days but clears in under a minute. It has lots of power and seems to be running very well. Should I not worry about it? Pull the pump and inspect? Go to 15-40w? Strip it down and start over? I'm open to all suggestions. Got to tell you I love this tractor and just don't want to do anything to damage it.
Paul

For the warmer weather, I think your idea of using 15W40 is a good one - or maybe even straight 40W. I use 15W40 Rotella in my H during the summer. Having said that, I agree with the other posts that say you probably don't have much of a problem.

As long as you have good oil pressure at half throttle, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Even if it is just above the red zone, it's likely still going to be OK. As others said, you will know when you need the overhaul and I don't think you are even close yet. Years ago, I had a Super A that really needed an overhaul. When hot, the oil pressure was maybe 1/4 of the gage above the red zone at full throttle. I used it that way for nearly 10 years.

Hi Paul, I agree with Lee that you should install
a calibrated gauge to measure that oil pressure.
Even that 30wt oil will get as thin as water on a 90 degree day with the engine temp 190.

I had an A that had 10w30 in it when I redid the engine in the winter. When I put the plow on and started plowing I noticed after about the third pass the oil pressure was dropping. I pulled off the garden and changed to 30wt. That cured the low pressure. Hal

With that old gage you can't tell what you have. Put a good gage on it temporary to see what's up
then put the old one back on if you want once you know what's up.

My SC does the same thing but is fine. My A in mid gauge when first started then down when hot then almost nothing at idle when warm. We had an old 6 cyl chev truck while growing up that had only 10lbs when cold and near 0 when warm. We ran it for years that way by running heavy oil in summer and thinner in winter. That truck still runs today with no overhaul yet. too loose to quit I guess - ha ha

If it has oil pressure in the center or upper part of the gauge at full throttle, and that pressure does not drop much when it has been run an hour or so, I wouldn't worry about the idle pressure. I have a Super A that runs in the lower third of the gauge at full throttle when hot, I don't pay any attention to the idle pressure. It is on my list to overhaul, I don't think yours is. You will know when -- for one thing you will have excess smoke out the breather, and it will be using oil.

My C has always had mediocre oil pressure. I changed to 20W50 and I feel better. It probably needs a rebuild, but I'm going to wait until this fall, at the earliest.

I wouldn't worry about it.
