I recently bought a Mc C Farmall 460. Constant problem with garbled exhaust.Sometimes missing and backfiring The situation grows worse as rpm increases.Excellent and even compression on all cylinders.I have proper timing, new and good coil points, condenser, dist cap and wires.Cleaned and re-cond carb.and rebuilt the governor.I also had to replace a valve rotator and spring on # 6 cylinder. At this point I am wondering what I have missed.Manifolds are not leaking.Float level checked and OK. Gas flow to carb. is good. Has anyone out there had a similar problem.I am suspecting possibly bad timing gears or valve float.I need suggestions. Second problem is power steering.Power assistance is very poor .This tractor is fitted with a very heavy front loader but I am not certain that this is the cause of the problem. If there is a hydraulic filter in the system please let me know where it is located along with any other advice.I have the repair manuals but cannot locate either one of them.

I know you said the coil is good, but do you know for sure? Our 460 drove me stark raving mad two years ago with symptoms quite like you're describing for yours. Turns out a coil I thought was good was not.

If she is getting worse at high speed , it is electrical. My guess would be a wire or plug. Low speed is usually always gasoline and high speed is most always electrical.

I would open the main jet adjusting one full turn
ccw and I would check that valve clearance when the engine is cold. I would adjust the clearance
to .020" until you get the engine to run ok. I don't have the hot setting, but it should be in your manual. Hal

Most of the time a back fire is caused by one of 2 things. Problems with the carb running very lean or bad valves. But most of the time its a carb runnig lean.

Thanks for the suggestions and information.I have cleaned the carb.twice and fiddled with adjustments with not much success but will give that another try.I forgot to mention that the plugs were really fouledso I replacedthem with a hotter type of new Autolites.Checked appearance of the plugs yesterday. They are not fouled but are stained black instead of the light to chocolate brown color that's most desirable.I had set the valves cold at the recommended spec.and can hear them clattering. However am going to open the clearance to .020 as suggested and see what happens.About the only thing not done is rebushing the distributer, check valve spring tension and inspect the timing gears. Thanks for the picture.I had suspected that the filter might be behind the plate as shown. Appreciate your help.Ol Chief
