How about the coil? if it gets hot, which would take maybe that length of time. It's a possibility. But, You are saying it has to be jumped to get it started. HMMMM! It sounds like a very large drain on the battery to me. When you charge the battery again, make sure to disconnect one of the terminals. Charge it up. When you go to connect up the cable, see if you are getting a spark with everything off. Then turn on ignition switch and see if you get a spark. Now when I mean spark, I'am talking with everything turned off, their should not be any. With ignition on, their may or may not be a spark, depending if the points are closed. It should be a very minute spark even with points closed. It would appear to me from what you describe, a very large current draw. possibly, it comes when the engine is running. Another possibility is, the points in regulator are sticking, which would cause the generator to try to motor. This in it self would cause a great draw on the battery. If possible, I would disconnect the generator belt. Now with the battery charged, touch the cable to the battery. If the generator tries to turn. You have a stuck regulator, or short between the armature and ground on the generator. This will try to motor it. Good luck.

It sounds a lot like a condenser. They will sometimes fail in a mode where they short when they get hot. Once they've cooled off a little, they seem to work fine again.

One point you made in your message was that you have to "rejump" it to get it started. With a good battery, you can start and run the tractor every day for a week or two without ever charging the battery.

If you start with a hot battery and after ten minutes the battery will not turn the engine you have a serious short to ground in your wiring.

Hi Rick, I would say that you have a charging problem. Not Fuel. Your points if its a distributor are using all the juice in the battery and the charging system is not replenishing the batery. So it quits then you rejuice the Bat and give the points juice and it runs . Correct? Check out your Charging system JON

Those old Farmalls will run for DAYS on battery alone. We used to do it quite frequently on the old M. Never could get the generator working quite right, and one day it conked out completely. Ran the tractor all fall like that. The only problem we had was getting it started sometimes.

If it's dragging a fully-charged battery down in 10 minutes, there's more to it than just a charging problem.

If you check the fuel and that is not what is causing it read on. If the fuel was the problem then the rest is for possible future reference.

Do you have a magneto or a distributor? If you have a distributor it might be that your battery is bad (yes, I know you said new but new can be bad too) and that by jumping it you are charging it just enough to run for 10 minutes or so. Then the battery goes dead and there is no spark. If you have a magneto, the battery will have no effect on the spark.

Don't forget to see that the breather hole in the gas cap is clear.

Could be a fuel problem as the other guy says, pull the drain plug at the bottom of the carb. You should get a good flow from it, say about half the size of a pencel. If you don't the you have a clogged fuel system. If you get a good flow you may have a problem with the condenser, or ignition switch.
