Well I lost my Newest H today. If I can wipe the tears long enough I will tell you what not to do. We are having a dry spell here in NY where I am and no rain in the forcast untill next week so I figured I would get my trusty pump and fill barrells to water the berries and garden. I have a 50' by 100' pond that to my and my neighbors suprise is about 12 foot deep or more I guess. I had a dead battery on the H when I went to start it so I figured I would leave it running while I filled the drums on the trailer. So I get the pump running and am waiting for it to prime when I see the trailer starting to move. I looked up and the tractor is rolling on a fairly flat surface I tryed to reach the brakes but she started down the imbankment so insted of getting run over I desided she would only go a few feet in and I would pull her out with the SM or something. UH UH there she went running and everything untill I could only see bubbles and the rear of the trailer. I could not see any of my beloved H at all. I thought and figured big wrecker no I will see if the neighbor is around he has dozers and big tractors. I got in the old chevy and took off and here he was coming up the road on his pulling tractor I stopped him and he figured he would get the D6 but then said wait I will get the M&M A4T and I said ok I will go get the chains hooked. Well let me tell you that water was freeking cold I kept gasping and after about drowning and the 4th try I got a chain around the axel. Then I had to un hook the Ball trailer hook up . Got that and hooked a chain to the trailer with the chevy and got that out of the way. Just about then here comes the Big osilator. Well shes Out not to awfull hard but I have a bad feeling knowing she went in running that she might end up with a bent rod or something. Well I got to go start draining fluid and trying not to drown in my tears while I am at it. I guess its about time to get those breaks fixed so they work a little better to lock and have it stay put. STILL CANT FIGUIRE OUT HOW SHE STARTED ROLLING ON FLAT GROUND THOUGH. JON

Jon: I rather doubt if you did any real damage. One thing about a gas engine going into water running, the ignition will become submerged and kill the engine long before it sucks in enough water to hurt anything. Diesels are the ones you have to worry about as engine sucking in water is what kills the engine.

Main thing now is get fluids drained and get tractor dried out. Put in new fluids and run it.

As alwats I have a couple of little stories for you guys. Where I grew up the rivers were all gravel bottom. For the most part 2' to 4' of water with the odd deep hole caused by currents with spring run off and ice jams. Years ago all farmers used to hire bulldozers to push gravel bars against eroded banks, and just generally improve the chanel and water flow. This farmer was on D6 with operator and they were going down streem to some more spots where erosion was taking place. All of a sudden the dozer went into about 7' feet of water. The operator hit the decellarator, as he did the front end started to come up again. At the low point all that was sticking out were breather, exhaust and two men's upper bodies. The operator had the fan in the push position. His concern was had it been in suck position blades would have gone into radiator. He continued on operating, told the farmer no need to drain fluids as heat would evaporate any water.

I too feel for you. I had a runaway tractor recently, fortunately a Massey Ferguson 165, not one of my Farmalls. I had parked it on a hill with the brakes locked on as it can be hard to start. About two weeks later I was having lunch when I heard all this commotion down in the pasture. I looked out the window and no tractor, just my bull looking very guilty. I guess he was nosing around the tractor and nudged the parking pawl off. Anyway I found the tractor up against a big tree with about $5000 damage. I submitted photos of the tractor and bull to my insurance company and they paid cheerfully. Now I leave it in gear as well!

Wow MagMan...looks like you had some excitement to say the least but you are a quick thinker on getting out of the way and getting it out as fast as you did. I can almost see that episode (chuckle) the way you told it. Drain it quickly and it should be ok. It takes my H all day to get hot so the rods should be ok...Good luck buddy.

Oh wow! did you get pictures? Stuff rolls pretty easy on dry hard ground. believe me, I know. Had my pickup and trailer down in the pasture a couple years ago. coming up the hill to the gate we spun out so i stuck it in gear and shut the motor off (just like your H the parking brakes don't hold) I walked around the front to lock in the hubs and you know how a vehicle will try to roll a little in jerks turning the motor about a quarter turn? Well about the time I got back to the open drivers door it wasn't jerking! just rolling steady and gaining. I looked down and there was a rut where I would need to step to get it. I had thoughts of getting knocked down an run over all alone out there where no one knew where I was.... So I just stepped back and watched :( It only went a little ways, turned and jacknifed the trailer, bent the bumper and the trailer tounge. just another day on the ranch.

Jeepers Jon I really feel for you. That must have made your heart stop for a minute seeing that tractor rolling. Hope you get it running easily.

Go to a boat store and get some storage fogging oil that you use in outboards. Take the plugs out and turn it over to get the water out, then spray the fogging oil in the plug holes. Turn the engine over several times to work that oil in good. Change the oil and drain the carb. Put some WD 40 in the distributor and you should be good to go. I used that fogging oil on a outboard that went to the bottom and it runs fine.

Magman, try to get it running as soon as possible, that's the secret..good luck with it..I may as well tell a similar story. I parked my truck on an incline and being a stick shift I just put it in gear and shut it off. My friends just got their new combine and were doing soys at my place. I got down on my knees to check the ground for what the combine was putting out when I saw something out of the corner of my eye moving..it was my truck rolling down towards the new combine, I waved quick at the operator and he knew something was wrong so he lurched it ahead..truck hit the rear wheel with the bumper and the spreader chewed the front of the hood...I was more cocerned about their new combine..it was ok, I had to get a hood for the truck and have it painted to match as well as straighten the front bumper which came out real good..we all have days like that Magman....get 'er running...Mike in Exeter Ontario

ya, we did that once. the truck held fine until combine driver dumped a bin of corn. then it started rolling, took the outside snout off the combine and nearly ruined the fender.

Well maybe you will get lucky and just have to dry it out and change fluids. I've seen more the one things go in the drink running and in just a couple of hours/days they where running just as they had been when they took a swim.

I gave my 300U a drink once. Luckily I hit the key trying to stop the tractor. She wasn't running when she hit the water. I had rocks in the loader and no weight on the rear tires.. Whooop! right down the dyke and into the drink. Good luck, I feel your pain.

Magman, I feel your pain. Here in the Ozarks, we had the third dryest spring on record since back in 1936. That pond of yours has more water in it than our whole county does. Harley
