IH 460 Diesel Won't Start

Tried to help my neighbor start his old IH 460 diesel today (1960), but we had no luck. He hasn't started it for at least 5 years, maybe more. The fuel is old and one of the front tires is rotten. We put a new battery in it and it would turn over fine. It seems to be getting fuel through the lines. He pulled it for about 25 minutes and it would not fire up. Is there anything that can be added to old diesel fuel to help it out? Any tips for getting it started? I helped him with it many years ago and it started after about 30 minutes of pulling. It began to smoke and slowing began to run...kind of like water starting to boil. Back then he said that he had to pull it once to start it at the beginning of each year. After that, it would start on its own for the rest of the season.

Dunno Ron,

Sure sounds to me like the old tractor needs to be torn down and a new can of compression poured in. She sounds tired.

Sitting for 5 years without any fuel stabilizer
added, could have the injectors gummed up and the fuel tank too. Hal

We used to pull a 460 we once had after long periods of sitting. Our method was to not use the glow plugs, as the battery was always poor after these long rests. Instead pull it fairly fast for about 5 minutes, to warm up the cylinders, these engines are very slow to generate heat, by this time it should have some throttle and be smoking heavily with white smoke. Carefully inject some south wind into the air cleaner right in front of the driver, best here if the ether is very weak so as not to blow the head off this weakly built engine. As soon as it fires clutch it and crack the throttle, it should be running. I have a neighbour who uses ether constantly on a 606, since it was new but I am afraid of strong ether on these engines.

Ron, when checking glow plugs disconnect five of them and test one at a time, the gage on the tractor should read about half-way with just one glow plug hooked up. This way you wont have to remove them to find a bad one. Steve

Also make sure the glow plugs are working.

I would start by draining all old fuel, install new filters, drain pump and reblead, then put a healthy dose of fuel conditioner the good stuff lucas, power service ect. then pull until all the old fuel was out of the lines. I would have a second set of filters ready. The conditioner could clean out the tank to the point it would plug the fliters.

Thanks for all of the pointers. We need to fix the front tire problem first. Have a couple of flats right now. We are then going to drain the old fuel, put in some new and bleed it. Also, we'll put in some additive. One thing we couldn't do when pulling it Monday was get the throttle to move. It was frozen in place. We got that loosened up this evening. My neigbor said we need to get the thottle on high for the pulling. We'll check the glow plugs out too. I think we'll get it running. Need to get some air out to the tires right now. I think we need to pull it faster too. My neighbor is 90 and he is doing the pulling with a 300 utility, so we haven't gone too fast with it yet. He got all of the front lug nuts loose today, so we'll have the tires fixed soon.
