Is there any kits out there to put a hydrolic unit onto a A??? Ive heard that you just cant bolt on a hydrolic unit off of a super A onto the older As.

This isn't the greatest photo, but this is the setup on my BN (the pump sits on top of the generator and the belt going around both pulleys) . The ram is setup to take the place of the exhaust lift.

I bookmarked this link a couple of years ago when I thought I might pursue this on my A. I never did, but still interesting.

Good luck,
Bill

 Vargo ...sounds Hungarian? in reply to Ron Vargo, 05-27-2005 22:08:25
Hi Ron;
No, I can't help you with your A...but couldn't help but notice your name.
Since my relatives came over from Hungary, I just made an assumption.
Have a good weekend;

Ron: Some time ago on discussions here at YT this same subject came up. As I recall there is a nice little self contained unit, can be mounted under seat and driven off belt pulley. Of course it's not live hydraulics, but neither were the rest of Farmalls of early 40s.

The subject of Super A hydraulics presents two problems. The engine block is different and so is the torque tube. Super A block is drilled for mounting pump and the torque tube is flat on top for mounting hydraulic unit. It would be almost as economical to buy another tractor as change both items.

Sorry Ron, no such unit. Everything you see is a "farmer engineered" setup, usually using an old power steering pump hanging out the side like some nasty cancerous growth.

The reason a Super A setup won't work is because the hydraulic pump is gear-driven off the engine. A regular A's engine does not have the place to bolt the pump in.

My "44 A (since sold) had hydraulics added.
The unit was an older type power steering pump. It was mounted on the left front side. Looks like it took some engineering too. Can"t remember if only 1 belt was used to spin fan and pump or if a separate pulley was added to the fan. In any case, it worked well, lifting a very heavy front mounted blade. If you go this route, be damn sure you use proper hydraulic fittings and hoses throughout the system, lots of pressure there.
This one had been converted to 12v also and had an alternator, and I remember now that the extra belt spun the alternator and the pump. The mounting bracket(s) bolted on with the alt.

There is none I'am aware of ,in michigan we can get a peice of sleve from TSC {tractor sulpy},to put on inplace of the flat belt puly.Then we fabricate our pump mounting bracket. It takes some time to get used to loseing the hydrolics when you disengauge the clutch,but it is worth the trouble.Neighbor has a BN with a logspliter on it, works like a charm . fred

No kits that I'm aware of. Super A/C engines have a place for a pump, but not the straight A's. You'll have to run a pump off the fan belt. You can run off power take off but then you loose hydrolics when the clutch is in. I may have seen pumps added in front of the grill running off the crank shaft now that I think of it. Not sure if that was a kit or home made. Dave.
