560 Battery Questions

Greetings,

I need a new battery for my new (to me) 560D. The current battery was a 12V of undertermined origin. I can find no markings on it at all. According to the Op Manual, the 560 originally came with 2 6V batteries wired in series.

So would you folks recommend just inserting a new 12V or is there any advantage to 2 x 6V? What specs (CCA, anything else?) should I look for either in the 12V or 6V? Also, what gauge cables do you recommend for the battery connections?

Thanks!
Hal W

The reason they used two 6V batteries in series is because the battery technology of the time was not nearly as good as it is now. To get the cold cranking capacity, they needed to use two larger 6V batteries in series.

There may have been other practical reasons, such as farmers buying these tractors usually were upgrading from older 6V tractors, and had 6V charging equipment. Plus, it was less expensive to replace one 6V battery if it went bad rather than a large 12V.

Nowadays you can get a 12V battery that'll crank that old beastie over like no dual 6V setup ever could.

Nat: I beg to differ with you, depending on what you buy, you can achive the same cold cranking amps from two 6V in series, two 12V parallel or one 12V alone.

The guy who had my 560 Diesel switched from two 6 volt batteries in series to two 12 volt batteries in parallel. The glow plugs work great and it really turns a lot better than I ever remember my Dad's old 560 doing. I think you will not regret using two 12 volt batteries in a parallel hook up. I know I have large batteries with about 700 CCA each but you may not need that much. The lower the number the cable size is the better off you will be. Try a two or one.

I have 2 small 12 volt batteries in mine and it starts ok all winter.I think they are 530 amp wal mart batteries.6 volt batteries don't have much warranty and they cost too much.

2 6Volt batteries will combine to produce more CCA than 1 12V battery alone.Use BIG cables.Have 2/0 cables made up.Those are like tractor trailer truck/skidder cables.

Thanks for the advice to all who replied.

I'm going to go either with a single 12V or 2 x 12V in parallel, depending on what the wallet can handle.

I'll get some large new cables as well.

Thanks again!
