Working on a 560 D we just got. Has a miss at full throttle only, load or no load. Is this an injector problem? I'm pulling the head, so will probably have the injectors done anyway. Next, how do you guys test glow plugs? I tried hooking one directly to one of the six-volt batteries and nothing happened. Do they need the full 12 volts? Last question, when it's running, it leaks hydraulic fluid out the gasket between the transmission and the transmission cover above the TA. Why would there be enough pressure to leak that high? I think it might be overful, but not sure where to check the level. I see a plug on the left side of the trans case toward the bottom. Is that the check plug? The fluid level is definetly over that plug.

JD Jim: The miss you refer to at high throttle is a problem with the timing. Some of those tractors had a speed advance pump and others had the load advance pump. Very possibly the pump needs attention. They use an elastomer ring for the connection inside the pump as the drive connection. They tend to become stretched and lose some directivity for the delivery of the fuel, ending up with searching at high RPM'S. When you have the head gone over, take it to a shop that has experience with diesels. The valve recession should be carefully checked. This has a tremendous difference in the starting of those engines. The main reason is that they are not direct injection, meaning they have a lower compression ratio. The reason for the glow plugs. When installing the precups for the injectors, make sure the holes are placed to the top of the engine, they should be marked. Good luck on the 560.

much easier if you pull those injectors with the head still on the tractor. If they havent been removed for awhile they can be pretty tough to get out. If you don't have a puller, see if you can borrow one.

I’m going to guess here that the miss is due to a poor injector, but it could be in the pump or possibly a valve that is hanging up at high RPM.

Others have suggested ways to test the glow plugs.

As far as the transmission cover over the TA, the cover in the middle of the center piece that contains the TA should not leak, as that is a dry compartment where the direct clutch is housed. If the oil leaking is behind that, then this is the top cover of the transmission which is a blank to cover the place where the belt pulley would attach. This area gets a lot of oil splash. The cover may also have been taken off at some time to inspect the transmission gears or whatever and the gasket was not replaced with a new one. There is a plug on the clutch pedal side of the housing in front of the brakes that is a fluid level for the transmission/rear end. Removing this plug will tell you if you are over full or not, and if you are and the oil looks like it has milk in it, the overfill condition is probably due to water mixed in with the oil in the rear end.

With the glow plug out of the tractor and hooked to the battery grounded good the tip should get red hot quickly.

to check your glow plugs leave them in the head and on the tractor using a test lite hook the alagator clip to the positave popst on the battery and now unhook the spade from the first glow plug you want to test now touch the probe end of your test lite to the spade on the glow plug if it lites your test lite the glow plug is good and if no lit the glow plug is bad
