just brought home a md today and unfortunatly it does't have a serial tag. where are the numbers stamped in engine? Would this give a clue to what year it is? Tractor is in real nice shape not running no water in oil only gave 1500 for it straight as an arrow hasn't run in probobley 15 years but its free. Has two huge 6 volt batteries one on deck both in perfect battery boxes, good rubber decent paint, been sitting a long time any help would be appreciated thanks

If you don't have a serial number tag, you could look at casting code dates (NOT CASTING NUMBERS) that will give you a clue as to the year your MD was built. The casting date code will read like--- .11.4.R. which is decoaded as November 4, 1948. The letter stands for the year the casting was cast. IH started with this code in 1931 with A and went to 1950 as T, U & W, V was skipped. 1955 they started over with A. Look on the transmission housing and wheel castings etc. Hope this helps.
