Hi,
Looking at an old Austin-Western Road Grader. Maybe a Model 99?? Starts on gas, then runs on diesel. Motor is IH. Anyone have any experience with something like this? Where can I find some information? Thank you.

I have a 99M, with a 6 cylinder IH diesel, with dual exhausts. I have some transmission and axle parts, and have a friend who has some parts also, in so. Mn near LeSueur Co. Pioneer Power showgrounds. There were two different IH diesels in the old AW's, UD-14 with 4 cylinders and single exhaust, and UD-16's with 6 cylinders and dual exhaust. Kind of a neat old toy. I think I have a manual if I know the model. ID plate is on the front of the frame, I think on the left.

I'm familiar with the Austin-Western 99H grader, my dad had a pair of them. We eventually replaced the IH diesels with 4-71 Detroit Diesels. As I recall, this was a pretty straightforward swap.

Back in the 70's and 80's, you could get parts for these graders from Clark Equipment, which bought out Austin-Western. Clark has since disappeared through mergers; I don't know if anyone still supplies new parts for the old Austin-Westerns.

The A-W 99 was quite a grader in its day (the late forties and early fifties). It featured both four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering; the latter allows the 99 to turn in a relatively short radius (relative to other graders, that is).

I've seen graders that used a Farmall M for the power unit. Sounds like yours may be from an MD. An MD is a start on gas, run on diesel engine.

From what I hear, MD parts are available, but it takes some work to track them down. Not as plentiful as gas engine parts.

If you can get some part numbers off the block or head, someone on the IH/Farmall board may be able to confirm what you have there.
