To Bin or not to Bin...that is the question

I harvest about 65 acres of soybeans every year. With me working at an off-farm job, I have to harvest in the evenings/weekend. It is really difficult for me to get the harvest done in a timely manner (I do my own combining, while waiting in line a long time at the elevator in town to unload.

I am considering getting a small bin (3500 bu.), but don't care too much for the price of a new one (about $12000 w/setup). It was suggested to me to buy a used bin. Is it possible to buy a used bin? Doesn't it have to be taken apart and then re-assembled when you get it home? Doesn't doing all of this, in addition to having it hauled, make it almost as good to put up a new one instead? Thanks for any advice and feedback from this truly helpful newsgroup!

I've moved 6-7 of them over the years. Two 3200 bu, and several smaller ones, I moved intact on trailers. Trucker had a trailer with a low frame, rollers under that and removeable wheels behind. Raised the bin about a foot, slid the frame under, and reattached the wheels. Moved 6000 bu by jacking up the bin, splitting it horizontally half-way up, split the bottom vertically in a zig-zag pattern, pulled the bottom section inside- lowered the top section onto the trailer and bolted the halves together with 4 bolts. Reverse procedure at new binsite.

I dont know what its like there but here there are truckers who have real big 10 wheelers and haul for comission wouldnt something like that save you time or money or is there not any truckers for hire cheap enough in your area. My neighbor has a big N7, N8, N9 something like that gleaner with probly a 24 Ft flex head I dont know maybe its bigger than that but its a good size monster . He fills the bin wagons and has a grain elivator and when he gets everything full he has the guy come and loads and he goes back to work somtimes he even has 18 wheelers come. MagMan

out here in SD bins sell all the time on farm sales. you can pick the up for a $100 bucks all the way up to $5000 for a huge one(10,000 bushel). not sure where you are? pretty comman around here to see one split two or three ways going down the road on flat beds behind pick-ups. it's pretty comical when they get to a bridge and can't fit through it!

There are a ton of used bins out there. I put up a used one a few years ago at about a 1/4 of the cost.
A 3500 bu. wouldn't take long to put up, you can rent the jacks for that. Used bins from a jockey are usually taken down. Check a farm paper for a source.
$12000 for a 3500 bu bin seems steep, although steel prices have skyrockted.
