Belly Pump Question

Seems like the more I know, the less I understand. Just when I feel like I got a good understanding of my M belly pump I got thrown a few curves you guys might be able to educate me on. I got my usual good service from CNG CIH for replacement parts for my pump.

However, when I inquired about some of the "improvement package" parts I got a suprise: the newer style pin was unavailable (356 683 R1) and the valve, 356 682 R1 is over $180. The existing "valve" is just a machined seat about the size of a nickel with an concaved orifice. The parts guy (good guy but not Ken U., BTW) said it didn't appear to be an assembly. I had to pass on that one, if I can get 400lbs out of the pump, I probably can get by. I will just use my old ball and spring but does that make sense, I thought I read on this board that the improvement kit wasn't that much?

I used washers and shimmed the spring on my H belly pump. I think I has close to 600lbs on it when I did that, but since I put a live pump on and don't use it anymore. I think I used three of four washers in the spring and I never had anyproblems with it.
