Was the farmall 400 model ever produced with a C-281 engine or could this be a farmall 450. The tractor has a white grill and sides.

Pete: All the never statments will not sort this out for you. Tractor should have a serial plate, engine will have a serial number stamped in block as well as cu in cast in block.

Next step is go to casting codes. Every casting on that tractor will have a separate casting code. Those will soon tell you if you have an original tractor, or one built from two or more tractors.

Pete, the 400 never came from the factory with a 281. The blocks for a 264 and 281 are the same. The 281 just used thinner sleeves to get another 1/8 in bore size.

i think i recall reading in a book that some of the last 400's had 281's in them. i dont remember where i read that though. however it is very possible that someone put in a 281.

found it.

400's after serial number 31329 came with the 1" wristpin, and im guessing 4.125 pistons since i have never seen a 4" piston with a 1" pin. thsi would make the engine a 281. now what castign number the block had is another question.

4 inch pistons still came with small piston pin.in 400.
IH also made some 4 inch pistons for M that used small pin, they used adapter bushing in rod.
SM through 450 used same casting # on block exept
SM through early 400 ended in R1 and later 400 and 450 ended with R2.Think some replacement C-281
blocks may have ended in R3.Have looked at some 400 within 300 of ending serial # that apeared to be originial and they had C-264 cast on block.
Also at portland Indiana 8 to 10 years ago a 450 was being parted out and I purchased engine serial # 511 so that don't leave very many to end up in 400 with C-281 on it from factory.

Well that is for sure a 450 engine but as far as what its in your guess is as good as mine. If you go by the engine size its a 450, but it may have a 400 tranny etc as the others have said. Or you got sold a 450 that the guy thought was a 400.

As DWV said, it's not unheard of that someone changed motors, however, above the distributor, you will find the engine serial number and my 450 has the "C281" casting right on it.

If the serial # on the tractor is for a 56 model 400,it would be a 400 because the highest 450 #
never went that high.I don't think a 281 was used in 400,but not going to say it never happend. If it
did happen the 281 engines started at serial # 501
so if it came fom factory the engine serial # should be very low.You may have replacement engine,Check date code on block to see if its latter than 1956.
