If it has a working Torque Amplifier, you can't bar the engine over backwards in Direct Drive without wrecking something. You will have to tow it in Direct Drive, it will freewheel in TA.

but if the engine is stuck don't go jerking it around, you'll just break something.

Tell me more ,cowman. Engine will turn over slightly each time starter is engaged. Do I need to pull the head back off and lube everything good and get turning w/out compression to loosen it up????Please elaborate

Raffo: If your absolutely sure engine is free, and yes heed others warning on this. Once you can turn in a complete revolution by wrench then maybe try the tow start. I know what your facing with diesels from that era. Those 460 and 560 were miserable to bleed, some how they did improve that on later 06 and 56 models. I had a 560 and between glow plugs and starter and length of time to bleed. If you knew or were not sure pump was out of fuel, the most economical move was hook on and tow start. Gear sequence will not matter a whole lot if compression is good your only going to sucessfull tow starting in 4th or 5th, direct on TA. Anything lower than 4th tires will probably slide.

If the engine will "turn over slightly each time" that sounds more like a battery-starter-cable problem than a stuck engine. Does the battery have a good charge? Have you tried good, heavy jumper cables?

Is the engine stuck from sitting? Could be something in the valve train that's hung up. Is it possible that a cylinder got filled with fuel, antifreeze, water, or oil? If so, you will bend or break a rod or more by forcing it to turn over.
I guess if it was mine, I'd take the injectors out and turn the motor over with a wrench. any excess fluid would come out of the injector holes. If it's not that, take off the valve side cover (tappet cover) or the valve top cover (rocker arm cover) to see if the valves are all free. Cowman's right : a person needs to know why it's not turning before pulling it. Maybe you'll be lucky and it will just be the starter or solenoid! LOL.

can you put a breaker bar and socket on the center bolt for the crank pully and rotate it? if that's not possible then put the tranny in 5th gear and rock it via the tires and watch the fan to see if it rotates. if non of the above work then yes, the head coming off will be a start. as cowman said, if it's stuck and you try to pull it it'll hurt alot more!
