The pics need to be hosted somewhere on the web. Then you need to get the URL that points to the picture, like>Link

Stuff>Link that in an image tag when you post:
[less-than symbol]img src="[the URL from above]"[greater-than symbol]

You mean you can't just type the URL string in the "Optional image URL" box, but you have to use the HTML image src= code with it? Seems more than a little misleading!

That must be why I always fail to get my hosted images to pop up...

no, you can use the handy image url box. as long as you copy the url correctly it should work. but you can't copy the url for the whole web page. that won't work. you have to have the url for just the picture. if you right click on the picture, the select "properties" it will show you the url you need. then just "copy" and "paste"
