H Carb Leak (update)

I figured out what caused the carburator to start leaking like a seive without warning. I had put gasoline in the tractor a week ago and started and ran it for the first time. It turns out there was a tiny hole in the float and it took about a week to fill with gas, and when it did, I ended up with four gallons on the floor (among other things, I am going to remember to turn off the gas after each use!). Thanks to Don LC, Rusty Farmall, and Peabody for the helpful advice on an earlier post.

Now, how do I patch the hole in the float (brass)?!

Tony

If I where you I'd just buy a new float $20 cheap and then you know its good and you also will not have the worry of it blowing up in your face if you screw up

Old,

Where can I buy one? Do the Case dealerships sell them?

Thanks,

Tony

Purdue, I purchased a new float for my M from my local Case-IH dealer about two years ago. Didn't even have to order it, it was on the shelf. I would imagine that an H would be just as available.

Thanks, I'll sneak over to the Case dealer after work! Buying a new float will be cheaper than buying a new soldering gun, flux, and solder!

I tried to find one on this site, but the rebuild kits didn't appear to have floats with them. I'll check again.

Floats aren't part of a kit it has to be brought by its self.

I have fixed brass floats by drilling the hole out to 1/16 so you can get all the gas out, then clean and flux the brass and solder it with a small iron.

Thanks Paul. I'll try that (already did the pin prick to widen the hole to get the gas out -- will try soldering tomorrow!).

PerdueAg, Hope that works for you. But one leak in the float may be an indication that the entire float wall has corroded to the point that you will experience future leaks rather soon. It did that to me a couple of years ago. I used JB Weld instead of solder. Make sure you use as little as you can, cause the stuff is heavy. I sealed one hole, but several months later another developed; I sealed it, and next thing I know the float is just too heavy with all the patching to do its job. That's when I had to beg on this sight for a NOS replacement float for a Carter carb. You know the rest of the story. The guys on this sight came to the rescue. My NOS float has my 52 SC running good as gold (except I got to let that durned nest of wrens twixt the radiator and fan fledge afore I can crank her up again!)

I wondered about JB weld. I use that stuff all the time, but wasn't sure if it would dissolve in gas after it set up. Thanks for the tip.

I have heard (no experience personally) that JB will hold up for sealing gasoline leaks, but will not work on Diesel fuel becasue of the oily naiture. Seems to make sense, so I thought I'd pass it along...

JB weld will hold up to gasoline, I have used it to patch gas tanks on cars and trucks when they got punctured from something on the road, worked very well. I also used JB weld to secure the small riser pipe I installed in the inlet of the sediment bowl on my M, that part is completely immersed in gasoline all the time. Three years later it is holding up just fine.
