300's versus M's

I usually haunt the Ford and Ferguson boards as I've yet to acquire any red paint for my collection, but my buddy bought a super sharp '55 300 at a sale last weekend and I thought I'd ask here for a little advice. The machine runs like a champ and for the most part everything seems to be mechanically AOK except for the PTO. It's not working. We tried moving the lever on the bottom of the belly, but that didn't get us anything either. His grandfather is a long time Farmall man and he said it's likely got a broken shifter fork and will need to be split to fix. Here's the big question: Are there any similarities or interchangeability between the PTO parts on this 300 and an M? His gramps has an M behind the shed that's being used for parts. If not, are there any models that will interchange? Thanks in advance!

Joe: Go with the captain's idea, you've got to first figure out in which of those three areas the problem exists. First thing I would do, there is a cover you can remove from belly of tractor, which enables you to see the seasonal disconnect. From there with tractor not running, engage the pto, turn the shaft, and by process of elimination, you will know which of the three areas captain listed is problem.

Presuming you have the live PTO, that lever on the bottom or the tractor is what is called a "seasonal disconnect clutch." There is a possibility that one or both of the halves are broken, but there may be other issues. First, there is a splined hub in the pressure plate on the main engine clutch. The splines could be worn out on this or on the tube that goes in this hub which drives the live PTO. There could also be internal problems in the PTO unit on the back of the tractor also.

Hmmm interesting question. 300 is more related to an H not a M. M is closer to a 400.
But thats not the real issue. Most 300 came with live pto wile M's and H's had nonlive Tranny run pto's.
Some 300's did have nonlive pto's maybe for corn pickers or some thing like that. If the 300 in question has the lever on the underside of the clutch housing then it would be live pto I would guess.
I would suspect that there is some thing wrong in the rear pto unit on the 300. Maybe the clutch bands are wore out or the planitary is bad.
If thats the case then I would shop around for a used rear pto unit. Most can be had for about $150 to $200. Just one of the bands cost more than that from IH.
Here is a photo of a live unit.
