Last fall I removed the 3 bolt starter on my M for rebuild. Now its spring and I cannot remember where to connect all the wires could some one help. Its on 12 volt. At the selenoid (spelling) there are 3 connections a large one for the positive battery and a small one marked "S" and a small one marked "R". I have two wires one that goes to the on off switch and one that goes to the push button starter. Note: I am not sure if both of the small selenoid conections were used before. I have not owned this tractor long I have little expierience with this type of starter. Thank you for helping.

The one marked 'S' should be the one that the wire from the starter switch is connected to. The one that goes to the on-off switch is usually connected to the upper large post on the starter - this connects the battery to the rest of the electrical system. However, it should be have a very large ring terminal on it. If it doesn't and you know that it has not been broken off or something, then you need to carefully trace this out because something may have been modified on this particular tractor.

The one marked 'R' is to bypass the ballast resistor when the starter is cranking, thus giving the ignition coil more voltage. You may or may not be using this particular feature.

Tramway Guy, Thank you for the help it was perfect. I have one other question regarding what you said about the "R" terminal on the selenoid, If I wanted to utilize that "R" terminal how would I wire it? I assume it would help starting.?

It will only work if you have an external resistor between the ignition switch and the coil. The resistor is (usually) a porcelain rectangular block with the wires run to each end. The 'R' terminal would be connected to the end of the resistor that feeds the ignition coil. So when the tractor is running, the voltage to the coil is fed through the resistor; and the voltage is dropped to extend points life. When the starter is engaged, the full battery voltage (although somewhat lowered because the starter pulls the voltage down) is applied from the 'R' terminal, making for easier starting.
Many, many vehicles used this system, probably not a lot of tractors. The coil you would use would be designed to be used with a resistor, I believe they were pretty much just a 6V coil.
