Ok, so I thought that you could remove the clutch from the belly of the tractor without splitting it. Is this just a myth or is it really true. If it is true, what must be done? It looks like it might be possible, but someone needs to tell me what pieces of the puzzle have to be removed here. I am getting a little confused and frustrated. Dad is starting to pull his hair out.

The clutch disc will come out but not the pressure plate on the SM but not on the SMTA.

Clean the inside of the cavity and remove everything you can. There is just enough wiggle room to get the clutch disc out. Make sure you have the pressure plate compressed by putting the three mounting bolts in the holes to compress the pressure plate.

If you need the pressure plate out you'll need to split the tractor.

I know I've seen it done, and it's not the easiest thing. I don't understand how, though. Doesn't the transmission input shaft ride in a pilot bearing in the flywheel?

There is a spacer behind the transmission input shaft which can be removed to allow the input shaft to be moved to the rear.

As far as I know the early straight M could be changed that way along with the H but I think the SM has a clutch thats to big and you have to split it.I beleve the early Ms were 11" and the SM is 12" So start splitting her.

Not sure about the Super M, but you can change the clutch in a H without spitting it, however you must spit a Super H because of the bigger clutch.
