Whats the differances between the start and run positions on IH 484 diesel?. I don't know how it works, I just know it starts alot easier in the start position in cold weather, but in the summertime I go right directly to run and it starts right up very easily, whats the differances in these positions, I'm really curious as to what goes on inside the engine. Does it let more air or fuel in the cylinders for easier starts or what exactly is happening in there?.
Thanks in advance!

Jonboy, if its the same as a 584, the fuel shut off pull also can give the tractor more fuel when starting. On the 584 you hold the shut off half way out when starting in cold weather and it gives extra fuel to aid starting, as soon as the exhaust comes black and you get firing, release and the tractor should start. All it is doing is giving extra fuel. Follow the control lever to the pump and you will see the position of the lever at "OFF" and at "RUN", an adjustment can be made there to make sure you are getting all your RPM's. Oh so thats what it does. I wasn't sure what start did over run, other than it works good for cold weather starts and once it does start the tractor doesn't have any power if left there and runs choppy, just like pulling the choke on a gas tractor. Yes, the entire 84 series IH's all have the same lever in the center just above the transmission. Your 584 good on fuel?, our 484 runs all day long on 5 gallons of diesel. I know 584 and up had 4cyl engines and the 384 and 484 has 3 cyl engines.
Thanks alot Mike!

Jonboy, 584's are great on fuel, I can run a #10 Massey baler all afternoon and only be down 5 gallons of diesel. I have a B250 that you can rake 20 acres of hay with and when you look in the tank there is no decernable fuel consumption..good economical tractors...Mike in Exeter Ontario

He's probably right in that it gives more fuel to start. Not sure how exactly it works inside those injector pumps. But on our 484 the regular throttle cable or linkage is worn or stretched, and it won't idle very slow with the throttle backed clear off, so if I'm going to be leaving it idle for any length of time, I'll back the fuel lever down towards the "start" position and it will slow the idle speed way down. And yep, our 484 is pretty good on fuel too.
