I bought one several years ago. The owner said it was a super M, I ran Ms and Super Ms for a guy before but couldn't figure out the live pto as I had never seen an M with one. Looked at serial number tag and found out what it was. I had always owned JDs so this was all new to me. It was stuck, ta out low side, bad tires and cracked wheels but other parts all there and an aftermarket 3 point. Since the guy only wanted $100 for it I didn't think I could loose. Actually paid more for the JD #80 blade with it. I put in piston and liner kit and cam shaft(chipped on gear end) and ran with ta on high side for several years. Eventually had to split it to replace seasonal disconnect coupler, so rebuilt the TA. Also changed it over to 12 volt with alternator. As mentioned, a lot of parts are common to M, super M and some of the number series. Yours sounds fairly serious. There was a guy who posted here a couple days ago that had an smta parts tractor, maybe you could get together with him.

Buy it; you won't regret it. I bought one about 15 years ago and didn't know what I was getting at the time. It is a '54 SMTA and has power steering, live hydraulics, 12 volt system, lights and a tourque amplifier. I thought it was a little big for what I needed at the time, but it can fit nearly anywhere I need it to go. The former owner, an older man, had painted it up real nice. I added a farm hand bucket. The bucket gets a lot of use. You'll find that you probably won't need to purchase many parts. Most of the electical stuff you might need can be found at at a farm store.

Deereman87, The SMTA was the pinicle of the M series tractor.
The old M with its wt. to hp. to size design was and still is one of the best out there. The standard M didn't not have live hydrolics or LPTO.
These were the 2 main drawdacks of this tractor when they were new. The tech advancements of the day, finely added in 1954 everthing came together and the SMTA was born. But wait what is this TA thing. Torque Amplifies were IH newist secret weapon. Though Minnie Molines had been useing a similar product for a few yrs.
The M platform, now armed with LPTO, Live Hydrolics, and the TA which alloud any gear to be split by simply pullin the TA lever back, and the tractor slowed down, engine RPM stayed UP and a hard spot in a field was gone through.
These tractors are highly prised today. Not just because there were not that many produced, but that these tractors are just as functional today as they were in 1954.
The addidtion of factory 2point happened in the next series of tractors. The number series 400/450s.
Part are redally avaiible, for them. Overhaul kits. All tractor salvage yard can help locate parts. This forum is A Flowin Fountain fo Knowledge on IH, just ask. And there are good HD aftermarket 3pts hitches if you wish to add one.
I would say Git-R-Done.
Later,
John A.

Deereman87, Post some pic of it!! What are the #s of the tag? Since it is a LP set up The pics will tell us if it is a factory rig or field converted.
If it is factory, IH only made 500 SMTA-LPs But still either way factory/field conversion a SMTA is prized by every one. Hollar at me, if I can be of help.
Later,
John A.
