I just overhauled my W-30 & I am having a dickens of a time starting it by hand. It didn"t run when I got it, so were starting anew. I can spin it over several times with the choke pulled out, then open it half way, Spark advance 1/2, start spinning it over and all I get is a "chug, chug, chug". When I tow it to start, it will start after several revolutions and runs like a top. The mag is timed as the manual says, impulse coupler kicks, points set at .015", valve set properly, plenty of gas at the carb. Any ideas of anything I missed or am not doing correctly? Oh, it does have plenty of compression!

Does it act any different if you retard the spark all the way ? I wouldn't want you to get a broken arm, but the mechanical advance on a distributor starts at the minimum....

I had a similar problem with my '39 W-30. Without boring you with all the things I tried, the problem ended up being weak magnetism in the horseshoe that goes over the outside of the mag and what I will call, the armature. I had both recharged and I couldn't wish for a better starting tractor.

Check your spark when turning by hand. It should throw out a real fat blue ark at the plug. If it does not have a real hot spark it will not start well. But will start if pulled. Also make sure you have solid core plug wires on it not suppression from a modern car. When all is right these start with with 2 pulls most of the time. Good luck
